BANGOR – One year after a disappointing season in which a talented John Bapst girls soccer team failed to make the playoffs, the Crusaders are rolling.
“It made us frustrated and mad to not make the playoffs because we had so much skill on the team,” said senior center midfielder Catherine Lammert, one of four Bapst captains. “I think we’re going for it this year.”
Bapst piled on more goals while continuing to play tough defense in a matchup against Mount Desert Island on Thursday. Four different players recorded two goals apiece as the Crusaders cruised to an 8-0 win over the Trojans at the Dorothea Dix Psychiatric Center field.
Bapst, now 4-0-1, got two goals each from starters Whitney Sinclair, Morgan Chasse and Kristen Willard, while backup Amanda Martin added two more.
Sinclair, also a senior captain, got the scoring started when she beat a defender down the right wing and nailed a shot into the left side of the net almost 13 minutes into the first half.
“I think we beat them with our speed,” Sinclair said. “We had a lot of help from the midfield, too.”
Thirty-three seconds later, Willard put in a loose ball for a 2-0 lead. Chasse curved in a corner kick 1:44 later, and Willard gave Bapst a 4-0 lead off a pass from Lammert with 9:49 left.
“Our team has really been connecting this year,” Lammert said of the scoring surge. “It’s been really easy. We just know where everyone is. We’re very team-oriented.”
The Crusaders did struggle against the Trojans’ offsides trap, which worked five times in the first half.
“We’re probably known for that,” MDI coach Tom Savage said. “I think we’re very disciplined on it.”
Bapst settled down in the second half, during which the Crusaders were whistled offsides just once.
“We anticipated the [MDI defense] and after a while we figured out what they were doing,” Chasse said.
MDI had a series of chances in the second half when a shot from forward Danielle Hutchins rebounded off Bapst goalie Sam Maquillian, resulting in a corner kick. Maquillian had to punch out Jamie McKay’s kick, which was followed by a free kick from Tessa Irvin that just cleared the crossbar.
But the Bapst midfield and defense limited MDI to just four shots in each half.
“Our defense all talked and rotated around,” said sweeper Maggie Kane, who is also a captain. “Wherever [Hutchins] was we made sure someone was on her.”
Maquillian finished with six saves, while MDI’s Liz Sargent had six saves on 18 shots.
The Trojans (0-4) were playing without senior center midfielder Julia Macauley, who suffered a knee injury in a game Tuesday and will be out for a few weeks.
“We haven’t even had a chance to practice since then, so I think the girls’ confidence is down,” Savage said. “We’re looking for some small victories to build some confidence.”
