BAR HARBOR – A College of the Atlantic student has made bail from jail after she and her boyfriend were charged in the theft of iPods, digital cameras, cash and credit cards from some of her dorm mates, according to police.

Olivia Pell, 18, of West Greenwich, R.I., and Bruce Gustafson, 28, of Caribou were arrested Friday evening on charges of burglary after one of Pell’s COA classmates came across some suspicious activity, local police Sgt. Shaun Farrar said Monday.

“They basically got caught in the act by one of the other students,” Farrar said.

The officer said the duo went through the school’s library, some administrative offices and rooms at the Tyson-Blair residence hall, where Pell had a room, knocking on doors and entering rooms if they were open. They allegedly grabbed some things and had just finished rummaging through purses and wallets in one of the dorm bathrooms when another student entered the bathroom and found the pilfered possessions.

Farrar said the student had seen Pell and Gustafson leave the bathroom, and quickly contacted police and gave them a description of the duo. They were found and arrested a short time later.

“[Pell] has been staying with him at a [Trenton] hotel, which is where I recovered a lot of this stuff,” he said.

Five iPods, three digital cameras, about five wallets or purses and a dozen or so credit cards were taken during the one-night spree, according to Farrar. At least two credit cards were used – one to buy $180 worth of merchandise at Wal-Mart in Ellsworth and another to buy a $400 air rifle at Jekyll & Hyde in downtown Bar Harbor, he said.

“They made numerous purchases around town,” Farrar said.

The officer recovered all of the merchandise and electronics and the $220 in cash that was reported missing, but not all the wallets and purses have been found.

Gustafson, who had warrants for his arrest out of Aroostook and Penobscot counties, is still being held at Hancock County Jail in Ellsworth with bail set at $500, Farrar said. Pell was released Monday morning from the same jail on $600 bail, he said.

The officer said he thinks Pell returned to Rhode Island with her father.

Donna Gold, spokeswoman for COA, declined Monday to comment about Pell or her status at the college, citing the school’s student privacy policy.

Both Pell and Gustafson are expected to appear on the charges in Ellsworth District Court on Nov. 16, Farrar said.
