Greenville looks to sell tax acquired property

GREENVILLE – For sale: waterfront property on Moosehead Lake, inquire at the town office.

The town of Greenville has taken ownership of a 11/2-story cottage and lot on Moosehead Lake for nonpayment of taxes. The taxes have not been paid for four years.

It is the first waterfront property that has been taken for nonpayment of taxes in several years, according to town officials.

Selectmen recently voted to solicit bids for the six-room cottage and lot at 186 North Birch St. The town has the camp valued at $161,700 and the land at $256,900 for a total value of $418,600.

Repeated attempts have been made to get the previous owner from Hampton, N.H., to take action and pay the $17,843.62 in delinquent taxes without success, according to Town Manager John Simko. In fact, selectmen gave the property owner until June 18 to pay the taxes but have heard nothing, he said recently.

Simko said bids on the property must be submitted no later than 4 p.m. Oct. 3. The property will be awarded by selectmen later that night.
