ELLSWORTH – Police have arrested a 21-year-old Orrington man who they say robbed an acquaintance at gunpoint last week in Dedham.

Zachary Morneault was arrested Monday afternoon at his father’s home in Orrington, according to Lt. Tim Cote of the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department. Deputies from the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Department arrested Morneault, acting on a Hancock County warrant.

Morneault is charged with Class A robbery in connection with the incident that took place late Thursday night on the Mountainy Pond Road off Route 46 in Dedham near the Penobscot County line. Based on interviews with the victim and witnesses, investigators identified Morneault as the lone suspect in the case.

According to Cote, Morneault was in a vehicle together with three other young men when he allegedly held the victim at gunpoint and demanded money from him. The victim, also in his early 20s, turned over the money – close to $1,000. He was then left on the side of the road. The victim was not injured.

The case remains under investigation, and deputies are still trying to learn what events led to the demand for the cash. Also, according to Cote, they have not yet recovered the handgun used in the robbery.

Morneault was taken to the Hancock County Jail in Ellsworth, where he remained late Monday afternoon.
