BAR HARBOR – The Mount Desert Island boys soccer team was going for a shutout in Tuesday afternoon’s Eastern Maine Class B matchup against Caribou.
The Trojans got what they wanted and a lot more with a 1-0 victory over the previously undefeated Vikings. They’ll also rack up some valuable Heal points thanks to Tarek Dekkaki’s second-half goal that stood up for almost 37 minutes of back-and-forth play.
Caribou, now 7-1, was the top-rated team in EM Class B when the standings were released Tuesday morning. MDI, now 3-0-1, was in eighth place.
“It’s a big win for us,” said MDI coach John Rosenfeld. “We’re playing very well right now. Today we were able to maintain possession. Caribou’s a good team and they have several quality players.”
Vikings coach Mark Shea felt the same way about MDI.
“They’re the best team we’ve played so far,” he said.
After a scoreless first half in which the Trojans had just a 9-8 edge in shots on goal but had long stretches on offense, Dekkaki scored the winner 3 minutes, 17 seconds after intermission.
He got the ball from Billy Ferm, who passed it forward into the penalty area. Caribou goalie Eric Brown came out toward the ball but Dekkaki was first to the spot. Brown hesitated for a moment before going for the ball, which opened a window for Dekkaki to blast a shot into the left corner of the net.
“I called for Billy, and he saw me,” Dekkaki said. “I just lobbed it, one-touched it over [Brown].”
Shea said Brown, who was otherwise stellar with nine tough saves on 17 shots, may have misjudged the speed of the ball or had the sun in his eyes.
“One thing we noticed down here is that the balls seem to have a bigger bounce,” Shea said. “I think the ball took a quicker hop than he thought it would.”
The Vikings struggled to get going on offense despite 12 shots on goal. They had just one corner kick, which came with 3:45 left in the game. Shea credited MDI’s defense and midfield from allowing Caribou to get organized up front.
“MDI was very aggressive and skilled, and they really didn’t give us a lot of time to get organized,” said Shea, whose squad practiced from 8 to 9:30 p.m. Monday because of the school’s potato harvest break. “We didn’t possess the ball long enough.”
Defense was on the Trojans’ mind Tuesday.
“We were looking for the shutout,” said fullback Dylan Burr, who is a senior captain. “[Caribou senior forward Kyle Corrigan] is a great player and we were just looking to contain him.”
MDI goalie John Joseph had eight saves on 12 shots.
The Vikings will rebound from the loss, Shea said, although it was a bit painful because the senior-laden team is trying to better last year’s 8-6 record.
“We’ve been in the playoffs and had solid teams for the last couple of years, but we haven’t won more than eight games in a season,” said Shea, who is in his eighth year. “I think there was some pressure in keeping it going. But you can’t have a bad game against a good team, whether your record is 0-8 or 8-0.”
