CARY – A Cary woman remains in a Bangor hospital after she was viciously mauled by a dog she was caring for.

Maine State Police Trooper Tim Saucier said Wednesday that Jeanne Simpson, 67, was attacked by the mixed breed dog on Tuesday at her home on Wilcox Road.

Saucier said the dog was part Labrador retriever, but he was not sure what other breed the dog was.

The animal did extensive damage to Simpson’s arms and upper body.

“It pretty much latched on to her and ripped her flesh off from the elbow down” on one arm, he said Wednesday.

Saucier said that Simpson has cared for and rehabilitated dogs at her home over the years, but he was not sure how long she had the dog that attacked her.

“It just turned on her,” he said.

Simpson was taken by ambulance to Houlton Regional Hospital after she collapsed in her driveway and was spotted by people driving by the residence.

She later was flown to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, where she remained as of Wednesday evening.

Although the dog had been vaccinated for rabies, it has been quarantined for 10 days, Saucier said.
