Fall Run-Walk for Research
Join Hope Lutheran Church as it hosts the first Fall Run-Walk for Research at 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 29, at the Bangor City Forest off Tripp Drive, which is off Stillwater Avenue.

Roosevelt Andre Credit concert
Roosevelt Andre Credit, John Haskell and the choirs of First Methodist Church will give a concert at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 22, at 703 Essex St.
Credit is a multi-talented singer, conductor and composer who has performed nationally and internationally. He has been a member of the cast of the award-winning Broadway revival of the musical “Show Boat,” in which he played Joe. He has appeared with Whoopi Goldberg and Susan Lucci in a benefit production of “Guys and Dolls” for the Iris Cantor Health Center Foundation.
Credit, Haskell and the choirs will present gospel and blues favorites, and Credit’s musical compositions. A freewill offering will be taken.
Before the concert, a salad and baked bean supper will be served 5-6 p.m. The cost is $6, $3 under 12.
North Shore day trip
The St. Joseph Hospital Auxiliary invites the public to go on a day trip on Saturday, Oct. 27, to enjoy the North Shore Music Theatre presentation of “Les Miserables.”
Organizer Nancy Ziegenbien said participants will travel on a luxury coach to Boston’s North Shore. There will be a French-themed lunch at the Wenham Tea House, seats at the premiere of “Les Miserables” and a pizza buffet on the way home.

The bus leaves at 7 a.m. from the Park and Ride lot at the corner of I-395 and Odlin Road, and returns at 11 p.m. Proceeds benefit St. Joseph Hospital Auxiliary and programs.
Vafiades Pro Bono Award
The Maine Volunteer Lawyers Project, which annually provides free legal assistance to thousands of low-income Mainers, celebrated 24 years of “Doing Maine Justice” with a reception on Sept. 19, at the Lucerne Inn in Dedham.
The Hon. Warren M. Silver of the Maine Supreme Judicial Court presented the 2007 Lew Vafiades Pro Bono Award to Bruce C. Mallonee of the Bangor firm of Rudman & Winchell, in recognition of his outstanding efforts to provide the impoverished with access to civil legal justice. The award is named in memory of Bangor attorney and community leader Lew Vafiades, who was committed to public service.
Since the inception of the Volunteer Lawyers Project in Portland in 1988, Mallonee has taken on 43 pro bono cases and donated 817 hours to impoverished clients. Those hours have been spent largely in family matters, often involving clients suffering the trauma of domestic violence. The cases spanned five counties, taking Mallonee to courts in Bangor, Ellsworth, Rockland, Belfast, Newport, Dover-Foxcroft and Lincoln.
Since 2004, Mallonee has been recognized annually with Pro Bono Publico awards by the Maine Volunteer Lawyers Project, the Maine Bar Foundation and-or the Maine State Bar Association.
The Volunteeer Lawyers Project also celebrated the seventh anniversary of its Bangor office. The Bangor “Lawyer of the Day” program has placed 1,429 cases with volunteers in several counties. At the reception, Maine Superior Court Justice Kevin M. Cuddy, one of the leaders in establishing the office, spoke about its creation, volunteers and success.
This is the third year that owners Steve and Rhonda Jones have donated the Lucerne Inn for this annual celebration of volunteers.

Digital photography
“Digital Photography Workshop: From Camera to Computer in Three Easy Sessions,” will be held 9 a.m.-noon, Saturdays, Sept. 22 and 29, and Oct. 6, at the University of Maine Museum of Art, 40 Harlow St.
Workshop participants will learn how to use or better utilize a digital camera, optimize image quality on the computer, save pictures and print any size. The workshop is geared for the novice and the intermediate digital photographer.
Session one topic is “Understanding and Using Your Digital Camera.” Session two is “Digital Darkroom and Imaging Software.” Session three is “Image Manipulation-Critique and Troubleshooting.”
Gina Platt, UMMA education coordinator, will teach the workshop. The cost is $65 for museum members and UMaine students with ID, $75 others.

Poet honoring poet
Maine Poet Crow Suncloud will present “Stanley Kunitz: A Reading and Retrospective,” at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 3, at Bangor Public Library. The presentation is in honor of the late poet, who died in May 2006 at age 100. At age 95, Kunitz was appointed U.S. Poet Laureate.
After the speaker’s consideration of Kunitz’s life and work, the audience is invited to share Kunitz-inspired poems, anecdotes and comments.
Family Fall Festival
Carnival games and other family fun will highlight a Family Fall Festival 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday. Sept. 29, at Bangor Christian Schools.
Activities scheduled for the event are a silent auction, bounce house, face painting, music giveaways from Solution FM, a yard sale and a car show.
Pay-to-play carnival games include radar baseball, bean bag toss and ring toss. Festival foods include fried dough, popcorn, a barbecue meal, candy apples and cotton candy.
Families have the option of participating in three-legged races, tug-of-war and other games. A magic show will be presented at 1 p.m. and the varsity boys soccer game will be played at 2 p.m.

Fire department funding
U.S. Sen. Olympia Snowe announced that the Department of Homeland Security has awarded $14,820 in grant funding to the Brewer Fire Department through the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program. The funds will be used for training, equipment, wellness, fitness and modifications to the fire department’s facilities.
Iron Dog Competition
Does your dog have what it takes to be an Iron Dog? Bear Brook Kennel will hold its annual Iron Dog competition 9 a.m.-1 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 22, at the kennel, 19 Bennett Road.
Children age 5-16 compete with their dog or a loaner dog in the obstacle course, the tennis ball carry and the fastest dog race.
Age groups are for children 5 to 8, 9 to 12 and 13 to 16. A special category for children or dogs with handicaps also will be on the agenda. Each participant will receive a medallion. Winners in each age group who place first through fourth will take home a trophy.

Wild bird rehabilitation
Learn about wild bird rehabilitation with Marc Payne and Diane Winn 2-4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 30, at Fields Pond Audubon Center.
Payne and Winn are co-directors of Avian Haven, a wild bird rehabilitation center in Freedom. Avian Haven’s annual case load is more than 1,000 injured or orphaned birds from about 100 species, ranging in size from hummingbirds to bald eagles. Payne and Winn will explain the rehabilitation process, describe their facility, introduce some of the more commonly admitted species and relate favorite cases.
The knowledge and skill required for successful bird rehabilitation include the nutritional needs of different species and ages, protocols for recovery and emaciation, fracture detection and stabilization, disease diagnosis and treatment, and habitat design.
With flight conditioning the final step before birds are released to the wild, Avian Haven has a number of outdoor enclosures that provide space for the birds to spread their wings and build up their flight muscles.
The cost is $5 to Audubon members, $6 others. Proceeds benefit programs at Fields Pond. Refreshments will be served.

Blessing of the Animals and Fun Dog Show
Grab your pooch! The Animal Orphanage is giving dog lovers a chance to show off their canines at the 14th Blessing of the Animals and Fun Dog Show on Sunday, Sept. 30, at the YMCA in Old Town, in the back of the ball field. If it rains, events will be held in the Y.
The Blessing of the Animals takes place at noon. The Fun Dog Show is at 1 p.m.
The cost for the dog show is $1 per category. Proceeds benefit the Animal Orphanage.
The categories are sure to please every dog owner and include best-dressed, longest tail, best trick, musical chairs, waggiest tail and tennis ball pick-up, to name a few.
A kayak raffle and a 50-50 raffle also will be held. Refreshments will be available.
The Animal Orphanage is a no-kill shelter that takes in strays and houses them until they can be placed in a loving home. Call 827-8777 for information.

Spruce Run fundraising gala
Spruce Run will sponsor a 1920s celebration, fundraising gala and night of food, entertainment and contests for costume and dance.
The event is set for 7-11 p.m. Saturday, Oct, 27, at the Penobscot Valley Country Club. Dana Wilson will introduce local celebrities, including Bangor Mayor Richard Greene.

The Fellowship Singers
The Fellowship Singers, directed by Andrew McCormick, are a group dedicated to learning, performing and ministering with uplifting music of the contemporary, folk and gospel traditions, and traditional songs from other nations and cultures.

Areawide
District supervisor
Those who wish to run for the office of district supervisor for the Penobscot County Soil and Water Conservation District should contact the district office at 1423 Broadway, Suite 2, Bangor, ME 04401, telephone 990-3676, to obtain nomination papers. Nomination papers must be returned by Oct. 17.
Those who wish to vote – ballots are mailed to cooperators – in the election of district supervisor must contact the district in order to receive a ballot.
Those who desire to run for the office of supervisor must be a resident registered voter in the district. All registered voters residing in the district are eligible to vote. Additional information may be obtained by contacting the district.
Also, one of the appointed supervisors’ terms ends Dec. 31.
The board of supervisors is asked to submit up to three names of interested individuals to the Soil and Water Conservation Commission, now the Department of Agriculture, which then chooses the person who will become the appointed supervisor for the District.
Those interested in becoming an appointed supervisor should call or visit the office to see the district office coordinator for a copy of the form that needs to be filled out.
