HAMPDEN – The members of Hampden Curves found a way to get fit and support local youth at the same time. The 250-member club donated $385 in yard sale proceeds to the George B. Weatherbee School Green Team, an environmental club.

The team earned members’ support during a summer-long campaign. Each time a Hampden Curves member exercised from June to August, she earned a chance to vote for a charitable organization to receive profits from the club’s yard sale.

At the end of the 10-week period, members had tallied 763 votes, the equivalent of more than 381 hours of exercise. Curves members also donated items for the August yard sale, and many employees donated time before, during and after the sale.

The Green Team is a school-based, environmental club for young people that began in Hampden this year. The goals of the team are to raise awareness of environmental issues among students, teachers and in the wider community, lead and organize projects for positive environmental change and have fun while making a difference.

The Curves donation will go toward the group’s “Green Team Maine” project, which aims to provide schools across Maine with resources to start their own Green Teams.
