Maine Maritime Academy has announced three new members of the William J. Mottola Mariner Athletics Hall of Fame. The honorees are coach Davis E. “Dave” Wiggin, Bob Fauvell (Class of ’74), and Jack Cutliffe (’55).
The 2007 Mariner Athletics Hall of Fame induction ceremony will be held Saturday at 10:30 a.m. in the BIW Center during homecoming festivities.
Wiggin was the athletic director and football coach from 1959-65. His teams compiled a 32-10-2 record in his tenure.
Wiggin was responsible for elevating MMA from freshman and prep school opponents to a full schedule of four-year college and service teams.
He was instrumental in creating a league that also included Curry College, Bridgewater State, Nichols College, and Massachusetts Maritime. In a 19-year coaching career, his teams posted a 108-40-4 record with only one losing season.
Fauvell excelled in football and wrestling. He was an All-New England and All-America football selection at defensive tackle.
On the wrestling mat, he won NAIA championships in the 190-pound and unlimited classes. He won the 1973 Maine Open championship in the unlimited class.
Cutliffe played football, basketball and baseball at MMA after turning down a basketball scholarship to attend Harvard.
In football he played quarterback, defense, place-kicker, punter and returned kickoffs and punts.
During his freshman basketball season, the Mariners scrimmaged the Boston Celtics and he was assigned to guard Bob Cousy. Cutliffe matched Cousy’s 17-point output.
As a senior he was elected captain of both the football and basketball teams. In baseball he was a starting pitcher with a winning record and also played second base.
