Ashcraft, Hawks intercept Eagles winning streak MMA, Colby Mules suffer losses

ONEONTA, N.Y. – Mike Ashcraft’s third interception of the game came in the final minute and ended a potential game-tying drive by Husson College as Hartwick handed the Eagles their first loss of the season, 35-27, Saturday afternoon.

Hartwick, now 2-1, led 28-12 at halftime, but Husson made it 28-20 on a 70-yard drive to open the third quarter. Andre Wildman hauled in a 45-yard touchdown pass from Jonah Chappell 95 seconds into the second half to cap the drive.

After stuffing Hartwick on the next possession, Husson marched to Hartwick’s 14-yard line, but Justin Oelgeschlager intercepted Chappell at the goal line, ran it back to Husson’s 20, and fumbled it. The ball was recovered in the end zone by Ben Zarzycki for a Hawks’ TD and a 35-20 lead with 5:43 left in the third.

Sophomore tailback Bryan Ferguson capped a four-play, 36-yard Husson drive with a 13-yard TD run in the fourth. The extra point kick made it 35-27 with 9:01 left in the game. That would cap the scoring as Chappell was picked off in each of Husson’s last two drives.

Chappell completed six of 24 passes for 105 yards and added another 34 yards rushing. Ferguson led the Eagles with 113 yards on 18 carries. Julius Williams had 87 yards on 13 carries.
