CARIBOU – A local woman was severely injured Saturday night after her vehicle collided with a cow moose on Route 1.
Holly Handren, 21, suffered severe facial and head injuries in the 7:15 p.m. accident, according to Caribou police Officer Craig Peterson.
Handren was first taken by ambulance to Cary Medical Center in Caribou after the accident and later transferred to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. She was reported to be in fair condition Sunday afternoon, according to an EMMC nursing supervisor.
Peterson said Handren, who had been northbound, struck the approximately 750-pound moose and the animal landed on top of her 1997 Honda Civic. The force of the impact peeled back the roof of the vehicle and killed the moose, he said.
The vehicle was demolished.
