ELLSWORTH – A man from southern Maine charged in a string of motor vehicle thefts last fall was sentenced Tuesday in Hancock County Superior Court.
Clayton T. Burgess III, 22, of Auburn will serve 26 months in prison after pleading guilty on multiple counts of theft and one count of burglary of a motor vehicle.
Burgess and another young man, Nathan Peters, 21, of Orrington were arrested last November at a residence in Frankfort in Waldo County.
Both were charged in a series of more than a dozen thefts from vehicles that occurred the previous weekend in Bucksport and Verona Island.
At the time Burgess also was in violation of his probation from charges out of Androscoggin County. It’s not clear if those charges have been resolved.
While several cars were targeted, in only one incident was a vehicle broken into.
Items taken from the vehicles included tires, purses and a compact disc player.
Burgess also was ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $1,099.
