As I write this letter, one of my sons, Arthur, is now somewhere up in the St. John River area setting up a tent for the upcoming moose hunt. He said to me that this area requires $12 a night just to be in this country. It’s not like when we stay for days on Plum Creek land for no charge. This made me stop and think at just how generous Plum Creek has been not only to hunters and fishermen, but to all who use their holdings for one form of recreation or other.

I have been fortunate enough over the years to take advantage of Plum Creek’s generous policy on land use for the people. They could have been charging road fees and gate fees like their neighbors all around them. They have left literally thousands of dollars on the table by having this open policy for people to use their holdings at no charge.

Now they are going ahead with a developing plan for their land. I believe if one owns something they should have the right to do as they wish with it. They have had many meetings and been back to the drawing board many times trying to appease the environmentalists and others of concern. I firmly believe that they are a quality company that is trying to do the right thing with these northern lands that they own.

Roxanne Quimby and the North Maine Woods Association do as they please with their land. I may not agree but coming back to the ownership of their lands, they should be able to do what they want with it. Why not Plum Creek?

It is with a sigh of relief to know that we have Plum Creek still holding with the policy of free access to the North Woods holdings. It’s hard to believe that they will spoil this area with unwise and unplanned development.
