Husson College had its program-best five-game winning streak snapped last week at Hartwick.
This weekend, with homecoming festivities as the backdrop, coach Gabby Price’s Eagles are hoping to return to their winning ways.
Mount Ida (2-2) at Husson (3-1), 1 p.m., Winkin Complex, Bangor: The Eagles realize they’ll have to play better this week against one of their best rivals in the Mustangs.
Husson’s defense, which took time to get settled at Hartwick, encounters another slippery quarterback in Mount Ida’s P.J. Matthews, who has 775 yards and seven touchdowns on 63 percent accuracy.
The Mustangs are averaging 34 points per contest.
“They’re a very athletic team,” Price said. “They’ve beaten us three out of four years. It seems like they play great against us.”
The Eagles likely will try to make sure Matthews is contained as a runner and hope the secondary can handle Mount Ida’s receivers. Cornerback Doug Blades and linebacker Ross Salovitch are the tackling leaders for Husson.
Offensively, the Eagles build their success around the two-pronged ground game led by Julius Williams (90 ypg) and Bryan Ferguson (84 ypg). QB Jonah Chappell has a strong arm, but has completed only 44 percent of his throws for 167 ypg with five TDs and eight interceptions.
Victor McKenzie (16 receptions, 203 yards) and Andre Wildman (11-204) are the top receiving threats.
“We’ve got to get back to what we do best,” Price said. “We need to execute, stay focused.”
Mount Ida has allowed 36.8 ppg while giving up 193 yards per outing via the run. Greg Muldrow (33 tackles) heads up the defensive unit.
Westfield State (1-2) at Maine Maritime (1-2), 1 p.m., Ritchie Field, Castine: The Mariners hope playing at home will help them get back on the winning track against the Owls in a New England Football Conference Bogan Division matchup.
MMA (0-1 NEFC) couldn’t get much going offensively in their 32-6 loss at Bridgewater State and also had trouble containing the Bears’ balanced attack.
The Mariners look to control the ball with their triple option offense, which features Brandon Goodrich and Tyler Angell. Chris Kates has shared time with Angell at quarterback.
Westfield State has dropped two straight, including last week’s 42-14 decision at Coast Guard. The Owls average a healthy 391 yards of offense with a balanced offense that includes QB Dan Cohen (274 ypg, 6 TDs), end Scott McIntyre (28 rec., 388 yds., TD) and RB Jason Proule (61 ypg).
Colby (0-1) at Middlebury (1-0), 1 p.m., Middletown, Conn.: The White Mules hope to erase the memory of their lackluster opener against the Panthers.
Colby was unable to run the ball last week and committed six turnovers. It also had difficulty containing a potent Trinity passing game that netted nearly 300 yards through the air in the first half.
Middlebury is coming off a 24-10 victory over Wesleyan.
Today’s other games (1 p.m.): Bowdoin (1-0) at Amherst (1-0), Tufts (1-0) at Bates (0-1)
