HAMPDEN – An Ellsworth woman was taken to the hospital Monday after her car was struck by a dump truck on Main Road North near the Western Avenue intersection.

Helen York, 55, was turning left into her daughter’s driveway at 66 Main Road North, just south of the intersection, when her 1987 Volvo was struck by a Rancourt Construction truck driven by Timothy Hanson, 40, of Winterport, said Hampden Public Safety Chief Joe Rogers.

Rogers said that York failed to yield to oncoming traffic at around 12:30 p.m. Hanson, who was driving south on Main Road North, had a green light at the intersection, Rogers said.

“My heart dropped when the people showed up banging on my door,” said Aurora York, Helen York’s daughter. The accident site was visible from Aurora York’s home.

Helen York was taken by ambulance to St. Joseph Hospital in Bangor for minor injuries, Rogers said. She had checked out of the hospital by Monday evening, according to staff. Hanson was uninjured.

The dump truck only had minor damage to the front bumper, while Rogers said York’s car was totaled.
