Gagnon propels Ponies to win over Tigers

DOVER-FOXCROFT – Jen Gagnon scored twice as the Foxcroft Academy Ponies rallied from a first-half deficit to earn a pivotal 2-1 high school field hockey victory over Dexter on Wednesday.

Jana Kenney put 10-2 Dexter up 1-0 with 10:33 left in the first half, slamming home a pass from Jen Maroon. The Ponies (10-2) tied it seven minutes later, with Gagnon scoring the first of her two goals. Dankia Brown assisted the Ponies.

Gagnon’s unassisted tally with 23:18 remaining put the Ponies ahead to stay.

Renee Maheu had five saves on six shots for FA, while Dexter’s Sam Conway stopped 15 of 17.

JV: Dexter 1-0

Hermon 1, Piscataquis 0

At Guilford, Lily Barry’s first-half goal was the difference as Hermon earned the victory.

Carrie Cole earned the shutout in goal with nine saves on 12 shots for the 4-9 Hawks. Brianna Tweedie made 16 saves on 20 shots for 0-12 Piscataquis.

JV: 1-1

Girls soccer

Lee Acad. 5, Katahdin 0

At Lee, Amanda Gifford knocked in three goals while Katelyn Mallett tallied two assists as Lee Academy blanked Katahdin of Stacyville.

Heidi Sappier and Kimmy Thurlow added a goal apiece for the 11-0 Pandas, and Aarika Ritchie contributed an assist. Karin Bird had five saves on 12 shots.

Kayla Stevens stopped three of 35 shots for the 6-3-2 Cougars.

Houlton 5, Schenck 0

At Houlton, Emily Bartlett tallied three goals and an assist as the Shiretowners shut out the Wolverines.

Houlton’s Courtney Putnam added two goals while Martha McPartland had an assist. Madison Lezotte stopped all five shots she faced for the 5-7 Shiretowners.

Leann Toothaker made 16 saves on 26 shots for 1-9-1 Schenck of East Millinocket.

George Stevens 4, Penquis 0

At Milo, Leah Mattson netted two goals as the undefeated Eagles picked up their 10th win.

Madeline Park and Laura Overton each added a goal for GSA of Blue Hill. Sara Gunnedal made nine saves on 11 shots.

Erika Lyford and Kristyn Chapman combined to make 28 saves on 33 shots for 1-10 Penquis.

Ellsworth 2, Hermon 1

At Hermon, Emily Baranello scored the game-winning goal to propel the Eagles past the Hawks.

Jen Richter added a goal while Maggie Harding grabbed an assist for 5-4-2 Ellsworth. Rachel Arkin made 10 saves on 11 shots.

Katie Durgin scored the only goal for 3-7-1 Hermon, putting in a shot from midfield. Megan Herbert made 23 saves on 28 shots.

JV: Ellsworth 2-0

Central 4, Foxcroft 0

At Corinth, Jade Philbrick, Kelsi McHugh, Kristie Collins and Molly Chretien each scored a goal as Central shut out Foxcroft Academy.

Michelle Ferrie posted an assist while Jana Philbrick made 13 saves on 16 shots for the 3-7-2 Red Devils.

Sarah Whittemore made 19 saves on 29 shots for the 2-9 Ponies.

Orono 3, Dexter 1

At Orono, Lauren Wheeler, Alyssa Bates and Chloe Paul each netted a goal to lead Orono by Dexter.

Meghan Curtis tallied two assists for Orono while Ruth Mares made four saves on seven shots for the 8-4 Red Riots.

Sarah Atwater scored in the first half for Dexter. Ashley Richardson made 15 saves on 23 shots for the 5-5-1 Tigers.

Boys soccer

Central 8, Foxcroft Acad. 1

At Dover-Foxcroft, Ryan Bean scored three goals as Central of Corinth earned its sixth win of the season.

Scott Kelley and Jacob Speed each added a goal and an assist for the 6-3-2 Red Devils, while Joey Brown, Tyler Speed and Patrick Byers also had a goal apiece. Matt St. Peter and Tyler Pineo also were credited with assists for Central.

Yeung Jung scored for Foxcroft.

Pineo made eight saves on nine shots for Central. Alex Gray stopped 11 of 21 shots for 0-12 Foxcroft.

Mount View 3, Camden Hills 2

At Thorndike, Scott Gibbs scored the game winning goal with 12:46 remaining in the game to lift Mount View past Camden.

Jake Mehuren and Alex Pierel each added a goal while Derek Keller posted an assist for Mount View. Ethan Jean made 11 saves on 17 shots for the 9-2-1 Mustangs.

Fletcher Davis and Graham Safford each tallied a goal for Camden Hills. Nick Doucette made four saves on 14 shots for the 8-4 Windjammers.

Washington Acad. 7, Woodland 1

At East Machias, Todd Junn tallied three goals to power Washington Academy by Woodland.

Young Gi, Cale Stevens, Joey Hunter and Ivan Corey each added a goal while Nick Hickson and Paul Vinzani each grabbed an assist. Josiah Jackson stopped 10 of 12 shots for the 9-1 Raiders.

Scott Brewer scored a goal for Woodland while Dan Proloux made 29 saves on 47 shots for the 7-3-2 Dragons.

DI-Stonington 9, Searsport 0

At Deer Isle, Collin Ciomei scored three goals and shared time in goal with Joe Carter, who also scored, and Brett Gagne, as the Mariners cruised to the win.

Nathan Joyce, Eben Powers, Jay Joyce, John Lymburner and Ian Pelletier added a goal apiece for 5-3-2 Deer Isle-Stonington. The Mariners’ goaltending trio stopped all four shots they faced.

Ethan McHadden and Dylan McFarlin combined for 23 saves on 32 shots for 0-9 Searsport.
