On Saturday, Oct. 6, Bangor Public Works will host its ninth annual Household Hazardous Waste collection at 530 Maine Ave. Residents of Bangor, Bradley, Brewer, Carmel, Dedham, Dixmont, Eddington, Etna, Glenburn, Hampden, Hermon, Holden, Indian Island, Kenduskeag, Milford, Newburgh, Old Town, Orono, Orrington, Stetson, Veazie and Winterport may take part.

Residents from these communities must have a residential household hazardous waste permit and bring it to Public Works on Oct. 6. Bangor residents must obtain permits by noon Friday, Oct. 5, at the Bangor City Information Desk, 73 Harlow St., or at Public Works, 530 Maine Ave.

Products that can be brought to the event are oil-based paint, turpentine, used motor oil, old gasoline, brake fluid, paint remover and thinners, linseed oil, used antifreeze, varnish, transmission fluid, pesticides, herbicides and fungicides. Universal waste also can also be brought to the event – rechargeable batteries, fluorescent lamps, and mercury thermometers and thermostats. Residents may bring one computer, one monitor, one keyboard and one television.

On Saturday, Oct. 6, the combined efforts from all of the communities will ensure that several thousand gallons of oil-based products will be taken out of the waste stream and disposed of properly. Additionally, hundreds of computers, televisions and fluorescent light bulbs will be sent to facilities that properly dispose of or recycle these items.
