Column

Concert cancellation forces Rockin’ Out to improvise

One thing that’s simultaneously exciting and totally frustrating about journalism is its fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants nature.

For example: I wrote a lovely column earlier this week about the Eric Lindell Band, which was scheduled to play at the Unity Centre for the Performing Arts tonight. Then I checked my e-mail and saw that Lindell got sick and canned the gig, leaving me here at 10:30 Thursday morning trying to think of something to write about. Whoops.

Of course, I hope Lindell feels better soon and reschedules the show if possible, since he’s very talented and a supernice guy to boot, and I recommend that you all attend a show at Unity (www.unitymaine.org) at some point. Meanwhile, I suppose the thing to do is, in the immortal words of Bachman Turner Overdrive, take care of business. So here are a few nuggets of information that have yet to find a home in the ol’ Rockin’ Out. Our regularly scheduled column will return next week. Same BDN time; same BDN channel.

. Hey kids! Have you heard of this amazing new invention called the Internet? It’s really cool! Why, just yesterday I got an e-mail from my new friend in Nigeria (he wants to give me a million dollars!), and then I looked at some pictures of cats being really cute. I’m not sure if it’s going to catch on, but then again, they said that about flying cars, and look where we’re at now.

The Bangor Daily News even has its own “Web site” – www.bangordailynews.com – and has permitted some of its reporters to contribute to it. I have this thing called a “blog,” where I write about music, art, nightlife and other cultural things in eastern Maine, as well as post videos, MP3s and pictures. It’s called Rock Blogster, and it’s not a bad resource for seeing what’s going on ’round these parts each weekend, if I do say so myself.

If you go to the BDN Web site and scroll to the bottom, you’ll see links to Rock Blogster, as well as Kristen Andresen’s ShopBlog, Aimee Dolloff’s Reality Bytes, and many more. You’ve seriously got to get an Internet. You don’t know what you’re missing.

. Every two months or so I devote a column to highlighting some of the bigger shows that go on around the state and outside of our readership area. My last one was at the end of August, and since then a couple more really cool gigs have been announced. Namely, the Gogol Bordello show at Bates College in Lewiston on Saturday, Oct. 13, and the My Chemical Romance concert at the University of Maine in Orono on Saturday, Oct. 27. It just so happens that I adore both those bands – the former because it’s a crazy gypsy dub-punk explosion, and the latter because it’s a totally bombastic version of Queen, filtered through goth and emo culture. I’m wicked psyched for both.

. Before I say anything else about Ofelia’s on Central Street in Bangor, I’ll make it very clear that I’m intimately involved in the goings-on there and am thus generally prohibited from writing about them. That said, have you been to Ofelia’s? If you haven’t, you need to go. Like, now. It’s the best thing that has happened to downtown Bangor in years. There’s art and music and film and dance and poetry, and they give food and clothes to needy people, and everyone – all ages and backgrounds – is invited. The First Friday art opening is tonight, starting at 8. Go. Seriously. It makes me proud to live in Bangor.

. I’ve been told on numerous occasions that the picture that accompanies my column makes me look really old. Just last night some dude told me he assumed I was in my 40s. I’m not in my 40s. I’m 25. I’m young and hip, dammit. I’m working on getting a new one that more accurately reflects my personality, so that it’s not so much “moderately cool librarian” and more “rocker chick with awesome hair” (not that I don’t know some really cool librarians).

. You don’t need to be shy. I don’t bite. I’m really nice, actually. Please, e-mail me and tell me if you have a band, or if you know of a cool show somewhere, or even if you just have suggestions for something for me to write about. I am always, always looking for new bands and new content, and your help is greatly appreciated. Drop me a line at eburnham@bangordaily
