Thank you for your front-page coverage of the peace rally held last Saturday at Bass Park (BDN, Oct. 1). I was particularly pleased that you featured Alice Horrigan, who spoke out eloquently and passionately against the war, clearly “distraught” over the loss of her son, the nearly 4,000 other Americans lost to this war, and the hundreds of thousands of Iraqis who have died or have become refugees.

Your decision to use her words “To die for a lie” as your headline showed a temerity that gives heart to those of us who have become disgusted with the Bush administration’s “war on terror.” That so many billions of dollars should go toward funding this ill-conceived war while economic, health care and environmental needs go unmet is unconscionable. It is unfortunate that the local television media did not offer coverage of this important event. The preponderance of cars driving by the chain of sign bearers along Main Street honked in affirmation.
