BANGOR – Spruce Run, the domestic violence project serving Penobscot County, has received notification of two grants to fund additional services in northern Penobscot County.

One grant, awarded through the federal Department of Justice, Office on Violence Against Women was received in partnership with Penquis. This discretionary grant program provides transitional housing services for individuals who are homeless due to domestic violence and in need of transitional housing. The grant was widely supported by community members, including local law enforcement.

Another grant, also awarded by Department of Justice, Office on Violence Against Women through the Maine Department of Public Safety, will provide outreach and raise awareness of domestic abuse and Spruce Run’s services to northern Penobscot County.

Spruce Run provides services for people affected by domestic abuse and fosters a coordinated community response to the issue. Services include a 24-hour hot line; emergency shelter; support and education groups; transitional housing; children’s services; youth-focused prevention programs; advocacy within the child protective, legal, and other systems; and training and community education.
