Peace & Justice Center to honor two lawyers

Each year, people associated with the Peace & Justice Center of Eastern Maine gather to share the bounties of the season and to celebrate the good works of those who volunteer their services to assist others.

Sandy Tardiff, volunteer and development coordinator for the center, wrote that the center’s 18th annual harvest supper is 6-8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, at the Unitarian Universalist Church on Park Street in Bangor.

Attendees are asked to bring a vegetarian dish to share “made from the bounty of this year’s garden harvest,” Tardiff wrote of the event for which the suggested donation is $10 for adults, $15 for families, $3 for children under 12.

“The harvest supper is a time for everyone to come together for an evening of good food, friendship and to celebrate the fruits of our labor for peace and justice over this past year,” she added.

Tardiff announced this year’s Hands of Peace award recipients are Bar Harbor lawyer Lynne Williams and lawyer Phil Worden of Northeast Harbor.

The lawyers “are being honored for their pro bono counsel and representation of more than 50 nonviolent civil disobedience cases involving Mainers calling for an end to the war and occupation of Iraq,” Tardiff wrote.

Williams and Worden “have devoted countless hours serving as legal observers of nonviolent civil disobedience, provided legal representation and have informed activists about their rights and the possible consequences of nonviolent action.”

“Through their efforts, they have upheld civil liberties and have been powerful advocates for dissent so essential for a vital democracy,” she wrote.

Tardiff added that, to make this evening complete, attendees will be entertained by Waldo Caballero “playing the zamponas,” which is a “South American panpipe.”
