UM student injured in 3-vehicle accident

One woman was injured Tuesday when she ran a stop sign on Lakeview Road in Glenburn and her car hit two other vehicles, according to Penobscot County Sheriff’s Sgt. Michael Burgess.

Leah Gomes, 22, a student at the University of Maine from Sangerville, told police she’s not familiar with the road.

Burgess said speed and alcohol were not factors in the crash that occurred around 11 a.m.

Gomes collided with a truck that was making a left-hand turn, fishtailed, and struck another vehicle that was stopped at Lancaster Brook Road. While the other vehicles were damaged, Gomes’ car was destroyed, Burgess said.

Gomes was the only one injured in the accident and had to be pried from the vehicle. She was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center to be treated for minor cuts and bruises. Gomes was wearing a seat belt, Burgess said. (Aimee Dolloff, BDN)

Brewer firefighters were called to the Lemforder Corp. just before 6 a.m. Tuesday and found smoke billowing out of the building. The fire was in the air-handling system over one of the automated machines. Apparently a spark caused paper filters to catch fire, said Brewer firefighter Kevin Pelotte.

The night crew was evacuated, but the small fire was extinguished quickly, Pelotte said.
