New aquatics director
OLD TOWN – Mary Beth Kuliga has joined the Old Town-Orono YMCA as senior director of aquatics and competitive swimming.
She was a YMCA-age group swimmer for the Sanford Titans at Sanford YMCA. She graduated from Springfield College in Springfield, Mass., in 2004 with a bachelor’s degree in athletic training. At Springfield, she was a member of the varsity swim team, which won four conference championships. She was a member of a relay team, which made national cuts, and set two school and conference records.
For the past three years, Kuliga has been an aquatics director at Hockomock Area YMCA in North Attleboro, Mass., managing four pools, a lakefront and a summer camp. She has overseen the swimming lesson program with 1,200 participants and been a member of the Hockomock Area YMCA Lightning coaching staff.
Kuliga holds certifications as life guarding instructor, CPR and first aid instructor, YMCA volunteerism, working with disabilities, YMCA swimming coach and principals of competitive swimming and diving.
Kuliga will begin her duties at the YMCA on Oct. 15.
Run-walk-hike in Orland
ORLAND – Enjoy spectacular fall scenery and a 10-mile run, walk or hike on Sunday, Oct. 21, in the Great Pond Mountain Wildlands.
The benefit event starts at 9 a.m. at the South Gate and covers gravel roads and footpaths, including some steep climbs and downhill runs. The highest point is East Ridge Path at about 700 feet. Assistance is limited. Participants should carry their own water.
Homemade awards will be given for first, second and third overall winners, and first-place winners in each age and gender category. Refreshments will be available at the finish line. Entry fee is $10, benefiting Great Pond Mountain Conservation Trust and the Wildlands. Volunteers will receive free food and a T-shirt.
The Wildlands’ South Gate is on Route 1, just south of the Route 176 junction in East Orland. The run starts 2.6 miles in on Valley Road at the junction of Hothole Brook Trail. To obtain information, to volunteer or preregister, call Peter Keeney, 288-3909, or e-mail pktrldrt@midmaine.com.
Turkey shoot
HUDSON – The Pushaw Lake Snowmobile Club will hold a turkey shoot 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 21, on Whitmore Landing Road. Most holes in a paper plate per shot wins a frozen turkey. Marksmen may participate in 12-gauge, 20-gauge or 410 categories. Participants must purchase clubs shot at $1 each.
