While Bangor Raceway readies itself to open its second season of fall racing this weekend, Scarborough Downs is priming itself for the richest day of the season with the Maine Standardbred Breeders Stakes 3-year-old finals.
Bangor opens its 11-day fall racing schedule with an 11-race program Saturday at 1:30 p.m. and continues on with a 12-race day Sunday (1:30 post time).
“The horse supply has been wonderful for the first two dates,” said Bangor Raceway director of racing Fred Nichols. “With 23 races to start out, that’s much better than it was last fall.”
Despite weather worries from Friday’s steady rainfall, Nichols is optimistic the skies will clear in plenty of time, but even if they don’t he’s confident Bangor Historic Track will stand up.
“The weather is a bit of a concern, but we did load up the track with a lot of stone dust and the drainage is pretty good,” he said.
Scarborough takes over big money bragging rights Sunday for what’s being billed as Maine’s richest day of racing with $298,797 in total purse money up for grabs in an 11- race program.
The fifth race is the first of the big money races as driver-trainer Michael Graffam’s Fox Ridge Michael is a prohibitive 2-1 favorite in the $69,389 colt trot feature.
Another 2-1 favorite looms in the seventh race as She’s Ah Corker – a foal from Presque Isle owned by Ray Ireland and Richard Ireland, driven by son Kim Ireland, and trained by Kim’s wife Wendy – is the popular choice to take the $69,405 filly purse.
Bangor’s Bill Varney has two top contenders in the ninth filly pace race with Pembroke Lori-Lou and Pembroke Primo both 5-2 favorites for the $69,523 purse.
In Sunday’s 10th race colt pacing final, Boogeyman is another odds-on favorite. The horse owned by Linda Douglas of Cumberland and Franklin Hiscock of Livermore, trained by Allie Hiscock, and driven by Stephen Mahar is a 2-1 top choice to win the $69,480 race.
Scarborough’s post time is 12:05 p.m.
