BOSTON – The American Red Cross is seeking blood donors as it deals with an unanticipated shortage across New England.

The American Red Cross Blood Services is down almost 1,600 units in the region. Red Cross spokeswoman Donna Morrissey says that means there’s less than a one-day supply of certain blood types for area hospitals.

She said the agency tries to maintain a three-day supply.

Morrissey said the agency usually has ample blood at this time of year, and she can’t explain the shortage, which developed this week.

Blood donors must be at least 17, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in general good health.

As extra incentive, all donors will be eligible to win tickets to the Red Sox playoff series against the Cleveland Indians.
