Religion in brief Bangor church names education director

BANGOR – The Unitarian Universalist Society of Bangor, 120 Park St., has announced the appointment of Heidi Zwicker as director of Lifespan Religious Education for the congregation.

Zwicker, 31, of Bangor began working this month. She coordinates religious education classes, including adult and youth programs, works with the Religious Education Committee, and recruits volunteers for classes and programs.

The fact that the search committee included a youth member “helped make me decide to take the position,” Zwicker said in a press release issued by the church. “[The job] seemed like the perfect way to get back in the UU church and follow its tradition of beliefs.”

A lifelong UU member, Zwicker grew up in Beverly, Mass. She has a bachelor’s degree in German and music from Moravian College in Bethlehem, Pa., and a master’s degree in labor studies from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.

Zwicker and her family moved to Maine six months ago from Denver, Colo., where she was executive director of Colorado Jobs with Justice. The organization is a coalition of unions and community groups that fights for workers’ rights and economic justice. She was drawn to social justice and labor issues through her UU experiences, according to the press release.

“I am very much interested in religious education and want to work closely with her as we develop the program this fall,” said the Rev. J. Bradbury Mitchell, interim minister. “I look forward to working with her as part of our church staff.”
