Religion in brief Former radio pastor to lead Belfast service

BELFAST – The Rev. Dr. David Glusker will lead worship services Sunday, Oct. 14, at Belfast United Methodist Church, 23 Mill Lane.

After serving United Methodist churches in central Maine for 24 years, Glusker became the fourth minister to lead First Radio Parish of Church of America in 1985. His daily devotions television programs aired on Channel 2 in Bangor and Channel 6 in Portland and reached an estimated 75,000 viewers.

Glusker’s Sunday worship services aired on half a dozen Maine radio stations and on stations around the county. They also were distributed worldwide on the Internet.

The minister retired in 2003 after 43 years of full-time ministry.

Glusker, 68, resides in South China with his wife, Nancy. They attend the Pleasant Street United Methodist Church in Waterville, where they sing in the choir.

The Rev. David Abbott, pastor of Belfast UMC, is expected to return to the pulpit next month after a three-month leave funded by a grant from the Lilly Endowment of Indianapolis through its clergy renewal program.

While on leave, Abbott planned to walk in the steps of Paul the Apostle in Turkey and travel in the area of the Middle East where Christians first worshipped, often in secret.

Services are held at 8 and 10:30 a.m. Sundays.
