Combine jazz and exercise and you get Jazzercise, and that business is hosting an open house, now through Saturday, Oct. 20, at its Ellsworth and Bar Harbor locations, “to celebrate our move to the Maine Grind block in downtown Ellsworth,” wrote Janice Woychik.

The open house features refreshments and classes, and is free and open to anyone who would like to attend.

Classes are 8:45-9:45 a.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday; 9:30-10:30 a.m. and 11:45 a.m.-12:15 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday, and 5:30-6:30 p.m. Monday and Wednesday in the lower level of the Maine Grind Block in downtown Ellsworth.

Classes are 8:30-9:30 a.m. Monday and Thursday at St. Saviour’s Church Parish House in Bar Harbor, and 5:30-6:30 p.m. at Mount Desert Island High School.

Closing out the open house week, Woychik wrote, will be a Jazzathon benefiting the American Cancer Society from 8:45 to 10:45 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, at the Ellsworth location.

“Five instructors will lead routines,” she explained of the free event at which donations for the ACS will be accepted; five instructors will lead routines and refreshments and giveaways will be available.

Last year’s event raised $800 for the ACS and “this year, our goal is $1,000,” Woychik added.

ACS representative Dawn Gray will attend the event as will “Cary McCown, Jazzercise instructor and cancer survivor,” Woychik wrote.

“Come when you can; leave when you must. Tag-team it. Space is limited, so come early.”

For more information about either event, call Woychik at 288-2236.

Georgine Butman, the mother of a University of Maine cheerleader, and a member of Friends of UMaine Cheering, e-mailed that the UMaine cheerleaders need to raise more than $28,000 to appear at the NCA National Cheering Competition next Spring in Daytona, Fla.

To help raise those funds, the UMaine Football Cheerleaders are hosting an Italian Spaghetti Supper Benefit from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19, at the American Legion Hall on Pritham Avenue in Greenville.

The cost of the meal is by donation, and you are invited to attend, meet the UMaine football cheerleaders and other UMaine athletes who will be accompanying them; have your picture taken with them; and participate in raffles to help them raise the needed funds.

Butman reports that takeout dinners are available, as well, and will be delivered, in the immediate Greenville area, by the cheerleaders.

For more information or to place your takeout order, call Butman at 695-2806.
