Once again, it’s time to grab that box of tissues and head for the Milo Elementary School’s Fall Fair from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19, at the school.
This fundraiser is one of those unique events where admission is just a box of tissues, which “helps keep all the children in tissues from now until June,” wrote Victoria Eastman.
And while the real purpose of the event is to raise funds to build a new playground for the youngsters, having attendees bring tissues makes a tremendous difference to everyone, especially during sniffle season.
The event “is fun for children and adults,” Eastman wrote of the fundraiser that features games for everyone, of all ages, at locations throughout the building.
You will find a putting green, games for children in kindergarten through sixth grade, basketball and a cakewalk.
Tickets for the children’s games are 25 cents, and, Eastman wrote, if children come in costume, “they will receive four free tickets for the games,” and be part of a costume parade at 7 p.m. in the gym.
She reminds adults that an auction, beginning at 6:15 p.m., features homemade crafts and food, and “wonderful gifts to be auctioned off, all in an effort to raise money for a newer and safer playground.”
Among businesses donating items for the auction are The Curiosity Shop, Candyland Farms, Linda’s Creations and, Eastman wrote, “our friends in Portland,” who run “Milo in Maine,” have supplied “beautiful children’s T-shirts.”
Another auction highlight will be autographed books by Maine authors including Janet Chapman and Joan Gannij.
For more information, or to make a contribution to the playground fund, call Milo Elementary School at 943-2122.
Internationally renowned stuttering expert Dr. Nan Bernstein Ratner of the University of Maryland is the featured presenter for the University of Maine department of communications sciences and disorders workshop on stuttering.

The cost of the workshop is $10 for families, $20 for speech-language pathologists, and more information is available by calling workshop director Marybeth Allen, 581-2403, or visiting http://www.umaine.edu/comscidis/.
