On July 20, my husband and I were sitting on the Katahdin on Moosehead Lake. We were part of a group sponsored by the Greenville American Legion post that was taking some veterans out on a cruise. I happened to be facing toward the rear of a restaurant. I suddenly heard shrieking and laughing and saw a young man take all his clothes off outside the back door, run down the pier and jump into the lake. He then crawled back onto the pier where he was handed towels.

I thought about calling the police but knew they wouldn’t do anything. I decided the best action was to act as though nothing had happened. I didn’t want any of our guests to notice. I’m not a prude but was offended that anyone could think it was OK to disrobe in daylight in front of approximately 40 people. I had never heard about the skinny dip sandwich tradition and was amazed to find out this has been going on for some time. This behavior was especially disrespectful because of the physical sacrifice these veterans had made in service to their country.

Mr. Turner’s behavior is not acceptable. He shouldn’t make his decision by whether something is illegal or legal; make a decision because it’s the right thing to do and is in the best interests of the community. If he can’t come up with a different way for his customers to earn free food, I would urge the Greenville selectmen to take his liquor license away.

Greenville is a great place for families with children to vacation. This is not the type of exhibition that Greenville wants to be known for.
