Downs, Kirby key Belfast victory

BELFAST – Ori Downs provided No. 3 Belfast with the winning edge with 21:24 left in the game when she converted off a penalty corner to lift the Lions to a 2-1 victory over No. 6 Nokomis in an EM Class B field hockey quarterfinal Tuesday.

Crystle Kirby passed to the right post to Downs, who sent the shot past Nokomis goalie Beth Flanders. Allison Murnane scored a first-half goal for the Lions from about four feet out after a scramble in which the Lions maintained control after the Warriors attempted to clear the ball.

Erin Knight scored for Nokomis from the top of the circle with 8:18 left in the game when she one-timed a pass from Alison Berg.

Leeann Donovan didn’t face a shot for 8-6-1 Belfast while Paxton Mohney gave up the goal on Nokomis’ one shot.

Flanders made eight saves on 10 shots for 7-8 Nokomis.

Class C

Mattanawcook 2, Boothbay 0

At Lincoln, Michelle Paul scored two second-half goals to lift the No. 2 Lynx past No. 7 Boothbay.

Brooke Hanscom assisted on the first goal with 17:01 left for the 14-1 Lynx, and Kamyrn Knott set up the second goal with 8:13 remaining. Sarah French made four saves on nine shots.

For 6-9 Boothbay, Brittany Dickinson made 16 saves on 24 shots.
