Bangor man nabbed in rash of burglaries

BREWER – The man arrested and believed responsible for at least 10 burglaries in two months stretching from Holden to Greenbush is going to have to find something to wear if he’s able to make bail and be released from jail.

“If he gets bailed out, he’s going to have to find some clothes, because the clothes he was wearing were bought with stolen money,” Holden police Sgt. Gene Fizell said Wednesday.

Brewer police arrested Paul Hatch, 21, of Bangor just after 2 a.m. Wednesday as the result of an investigation by police from Brewer, Holden, Bangor and the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Department, according to Fizell.

“He has extensive history,” Brewer police Capt. Jason Moffitt said of Hatch.

Moffitt and Cpl. Tony Pinnette were in Holden investigating the home invasions when a resident called the Police Department to report a man had knocked on both of his home’s doors, which made him suspicious.

A description of the suspect and his vehicle, a dark colored Camaro, were circulated and immediately raised the eyebrows of the Brewer officers. The description matched that of Hatch.

“Paul Hatch is identified as a possible suspect for a couple of crimes in Brewer,” Moffitt said.

Neighbors of the victims also provided police with descriptions of individuals and vehicles they believed were involved in the break-ins that occurred in September and October. Police are looking into the possibility that others may have been involved in the break-ins, Fizell said.

Hatch is believed to have entered residences, sometimes while the owners were at home, and taken jewelry, money and other valuables. He was charged Wednesday with burglary, drug possession for the approximately 2.5 grams of rock cocaine he had, and operating after suspension. Hatch was being held at Penobscot County Jail on $10,000 cash bail.

Three people, including Hatch, were in the car when police pulled it over and were taken into custody for questioning.

“The other two were getting a ride from Hatch, but they were very cooperative,” Fizell said, adding that they just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Police impounded and searched the car where they found items and cash that had been stolen during the most recent burglaries that were reported Tuesday night in Brewer and Holden.

“A large quantity of cash was recovered and the Bangor police executed a search warrant this morning in regards to information obtained involving drugs,” Fizell said.

Bangor police Officer Shawn Green located Hatch’s vehicle in Bangor and staked out the residence with Officer Kerry Warner. The officers noticed the vehicle leave and head toward Brewer, and called the Brewer police to notify them. Brewer officers stopped the vehicle on South Main Street near the Orrington town line.

The Holden woman whose home was burglarized told police she had just taken the money out of the bank because she was preparing to go on vacation. Police recovered about three-quarters of the cash.

“The money we did not get back was spent on jewelry, clothes and drugs,” Fizell said.
