Dougherty lifts BC Patriots by Van Buren 3-1

BANGOR – Phil Dougherty had a goal and an assist as No. 3 Bangor Christian ousted No. 11 Van Buren 3-1 in an Eastern Maine Class D schoolboy soccer quarterfinal Friday.

This marked the fourth consecutive year these teams have met in the regional playoffs, and in each of the three previous year the winner of the BC-Van Buren match has gone on to win the Class D state championship.

Dougherty scored the only goal of the first half as the Patriots held a 1-0 lead. Brandon Wilcox and Nate Fowler added second-half goals for the winners, while Zach Kutz and Won Teak Oh contributed assists.

Alex Martin scored for Van Buren on a penalty kick.

Sam McLeod made four saves on eight shots for 12-1-2 Bangor Christian. Pat Vaillancourt made four saves on 23 shots for 8-8 Van Buren.

Fort Fairfield 2, Woodland 1 (2OT)

At Fort Fairfield, sophomore striker Josh Booth scored his second goal of the match 3:12 into the second overtime as No. 4 Fort Fairfield advanced to the semifinals.

The game-winning play began with an indirect kick from about 40 yards out by Fort Fairfield’s Ryan Noyes that took a high bounce in the penalty area. The ball tipped off the fingers of Woodland goalie Dan Proulx and off the crossbar before Booth raced in to head the ball into the net.

No. 5 Woodland had taken a 1-0 lead on Cody Sappier’s goal early in the second half, but Booth tied the match with 15 minutes left in regulation play.

Austin Dufour made seven saves on 11 shots for 13-2-1 Fort Fairfield. Proulx made eight saves on 18 shots for 9-4-2 Woodland.

Machias 1, Easton 0

At Machias, Jacob Stevens scored on a breakaway with 13:30 left in the second half to lift the second-ranked Bulldogs past No. 7 Easton.

Stevens took a lead pass from Michael Little, then tucked a shot past Easton goalie Jeremy Brock for the lone goal of the match.

Justin Weaver preserved the shutout by saving all five shots he faced for 12-2-1 Machias. Brock made 13 saves on 18 shots for 11-5 Easton.

Ashland 4, Katahdin 3

At Ashland, the top-ranked Hornets rallied from a 3-0 first-half deficit to win when Jeremy Tarr scored on a penalty kick with 1:48 left in the match.

Katahdin of Stacyville’s Marshall Davis scored three unassisted goals in the first 15:07 of the match, including two on the Cougars’ first two shots of the game and the third on a penalty kick.

Tyler Cote began Ashland’s comeback by scoring on a penalty kick with 20:23 left in the first half.

Carl Nemer scored on an assist from Jacob Paradis 2:50 into the second half, and Nick Gimbel tied the match with 12:33 left on an assist from Kenny Tarr.

Lucas Belanger made three saves on seven shots for 13-1-1 Ashland. Matt Tarr made 18 saves on 26 shots for No. 8 Katahdin, which finishes with a 7-8-1 record.

Class B

Ellsworth 1, Caribou 0

At Caribou, Luke Haskell scored the winner off of a Zach Emeigh assist from about 20 yards out with 20:11 left in regulation to lead No. 6 Ellsworth past No. 3 Caribou.

Greg Berry stopped five of 14 shots for 11-3-2 Ellsworth.

Eric Brown turned away eight of 14 shots for 12-3 Caribou.

MDI 3, Mount View 0

At Bar Harbor, Skyler Lewis scored one goal and assisted on another as No. 4 Mound Desert Island ousted fifth-ranked Mount View of Thorndike.

Ben Young and Jake Merchant added goals and Abe Gladstone an assist for the 12-2-2 Trojans. John Joseph had seven saves on eight shots.

Presque Isle 2, Central 0

At Presque Isle, Russ Mortland scored on a Scott Wilson assist in the first half to lead No. 2 Presque Isle past No. 7 Central of Corinth.

Steve Carmichael added an insurance goal in the second half off of a Ethan Hill assist for the 12-2-1 Wildcats. Dillon Kingsbury stopped all seven shots.

Tyler Pineo turned away 15 of 17 shots for 10-4-2 Central.

Class C

Washington Acad. 2, Fort Kent 1

At East Machias, Joey Hunter scored the winning goal with 7:20 remaining in regulation to lift No. 3 Washington Academy over No. 6 Fort Kent.

Nick Hixson scored with 9:42 left in the first to put the 12-1 Raiders up 1-0. Josiah Jackson blocked eight of 14 shots.

Thomas Levesque tied it with 27:40 left in the second half for 7-8-1 Fort Kent. Matt Harvey made 30 saves on 35 shots.

George Stevens 1, Orono 0

At Blue Hill, Steve Ensworth scored off of a Nick Milliken assist with 12:31 left in the first half to lead No. 2 George Stevens Academy to the win over No. 7 Orono.

Rashaad Frazier made four saves on six shots for the 13-1-1 Eagles, picking up his seventh shutout of the season.

Nate Peterson stopped six of 11 shots for the 8-8 Red Riots.

Dexter 6, Calais 0

At Dexter, Rick Stewart scored two goals and Ethan Woodman added a goal and two assists as the top-ranked Tigers remained undefeated.

Stewart scored a pair of first-half goals as 13-0-2 Dexter built a 4-0 lead, and now has 33 goals and 15 assists on the season.

Devon Grant and David Wilks also scored in the first half for the Tigers, while Woodman and freshman Corbin Bilodeau added second-half goals.

Chris Eastman had his sixth shutout of the season in goal for Dexter, making three saves on seven shots.

Dylan Ramsdell made 12 saves on 23 shots for No. 9 Calais, which finishes with an 8-7 record.

Madawaska 3, PVHS 2

At Madawaska, Shawn Parker’s unassisted goal with 18 minutes left in the game lifted the No. 4 Owls past No. 5 Penobscot Valley.

Parker made a run on goalie Aaron Awalt, delivered a hard shot that Awalt stopped, but Parker followed up and converted the rebound for the goal.

Leigh Dolley had given PVHS a 2-1 lead on a goal assisted by Chad Tropier 2:45 into the second half, but the Owls equalized when Tim McDermott scored unassisted 10 seconds later.

Kyle Pelletier scored a first-half goal off a Parker assist for the 12-3 Owls and Nathan P. Beaulieu made three saves on five shots.

Dolley scored the Howlers’ first goal off a Dylan Thompson assist with 21 seconds left in first half and Awalt made 11 saves on 15 shots.
