EMCC foundation puts gala face on fundraiser

After a decade of enjoying success with its annual scholarship auction, the Eastern Maine Community College Foundation came up with a new event to raise money for EMCC endowments, annual scholarships and named scholarships.

This year, you are invited to attend the EMCC Grange Gala, which is described as “a bountiful meal with toe-tapping entertainment,” from 6 to 9:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26, at Johnston Gymnasium on the Bangor campus.

This gala is designed after the traditional, friendly, relaxed and welcoming Maine Grange Hall suppers. It features harvest colors and themes, with music by The Wicked Good Band and the Doughty Hill Band.

Tickets are $45 per person or $315 for a table of eight, and may be obtained by calling Terri Adam at 974-4691.

The menu includes vegetable potpie, pork tenderloin and roast turkey, with everything from hors d’oeuvres to dessert prepared by students in the EMCC culinary arts program. A cash bar will also be available.

You are on notice that this is a very casual gathering at which, the brochure states, “jeans are required, but flannel is optional.”

I am reminded that foundation board member Bob Stairs of Hampden told me a few years ago in this column that this event is a “great opportunity for members of the public to visit the college, have them take a look at some of the facilities, and learn about the food service program,” which is just as true today.

We have been informed the competitive annual Fall Carriage Day, featuring several breeds of horses and types of horse-drawn carriages and carts, has been postponed due to the possibility of bad weather. It will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 3, at East Ridge Stable, 405 Ridge Road, Charleston.

Free for spectators of all ages to enjoy, the proceeds from refreshment sales will benefit the Angels on Hooves program.

Justice for Autism with Community and Kindness volunteer Annie Schwartz invites you to The Concert for J.A.C.K. at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 21, at Ellsworth Congregational Church, to benefit the autism awareness group.

Featured performers will be the B Flat Ringers Bell Choir, flutist Lynn Hall, soprano Bonnie Hersey, the Madri-Gals trio, the sanctuary choir and others, Schwartz wrote.

The suggested donation is $10, free for children under 12, and includes an ice cream social.

Deb Jacques reports Pathfinders: Support for Grieving Children and Hospice of Eastern Maine will host their second annual Celebrity Dessert and Auction beginning with dessert at 5:45 p.m. and the program and auction at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26, at United Technologies Center in Bangor.

Serving as hosts and auctioneers will be Amy Erickson and Todd Simcox of WABI-TV 5.

Jacques wrote that the desserts will be prepared by local restaurateurs as well as UTC students and will be up for auction along with a variety of theme packages created by community volunteers.

The auction items range from Maine-made jewelry to tickets for University of Maine hockey and the Bill Cosby performance on Nov. 2 in Bangor.
