SOUTH PORTLAND – A high school English teacher was presented a Milken Family Foundation National Educator award at a school assembly.

Brian Jandreau, who has taught in South Portland for six years, was one of dozens of teachers nationwide who were given the award Friday.

The Milken Foundation awards recognize exceptional teachers, principals and other educators in primary and secondary schools.

Each year, up to 80 teachers nationwide are presented with the award. Since 1990, 66 teachers in Maine have earned the recognition.

A panel appointed by each state’s education department selects teachers without their knowledge, making the award a surprise. Recipients are awarded $25,000.
