STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Chris Brevi intercepted an Adam Farkes pass on the University of Maine’s second play of the second overtime period Saturday, securing Stony Brook’s 30-23 football victory at LaValle Stadium.

The Seahawks erased two 10-point deficits, including one in the fourth quarter.

Coach Jack Cosgrove’s UMaine squad (1-6) has now lost six straight, the first time that has happened in the program since 1967.

Football Championship Subdivision independent Stony Brook (4-4), which earned its first victory ever win over a Colonial Athletic Association team, used a balanced attack to rack up total 451 yards. The hosts also converted five of 17 third-down plays and went 2-for-2 on fourth down.

The Bears achieved decent offensive success as tailback Jhamal Fluellen rushed for 129 yards on 26 carries. Farkes completed only 10 of 21 throws for 154 yards and two touchdowns, but also was picked off twice.

UMaine was only 2-for-13 on third down and 2-for-2 on fourth down.

Bobby Donnelly had given the Bears a 23-20 lead in the first overtime with a career-long, 42-yard field goal, the third of three on the afternoon.

The defense then held, forcing a 41-yard field goal by Luke Gaddis, who had missed a potential game-tying kick in the fourth quarter.

SBU went ahead for good in the second OT when Conte Cuttino (32 carries, 171 yards, 3 TDs) scored on a 9-yard run.

UMaine couldn’t answer as Farkes was intercepted at the 13-yard line on the second play of the second OT.

UMaine had a 10-point advantage with 10:29 left in regulation after Donnelly kicked a 25-yard field goal.

However, for the second straight week, the Bears were unable to preserve a lead.

The Seawolves cut the deficit to 20-17 with 7:36 remaining when Cuttino capped a 72-yard drive with a 3-yard scoring run.

Antonio Walcott’s 34-yard kickoff return gave UMaine the ball at its own 49, but Mike McCoy intercepted a Farkes pass only two plays later, giving the hosts the ball at their own 41.

SBU moved down to the UM 8, only to have Gaddis push a 25-yard field goal wide right with 2:06 to play.

The Bears were unable to run out the clock, hampered in part by a holding penalty, and punted the ball away with 53 seconds to play. Kash Kiefer’s kick went only 25 yards, giving the Seawolves the ball at midfield.

On fourth-and-1 from the 41, Josh Dudash (21-for-32, 222 yards) completed a big 19-yard pass to Dwayne Eley. SBU ran one play before Gaddis booted a game-tying 40-yard field goal with two seconds left.

Lamir Whetstone and Andrew Downey each returned after missing two weeks with leg injuries to spark the UMaine defense. Whetstone made a game-high 13 tackles while Downey posted 12. John Wormuth and Jovan Belcher provided 12 and 11 tackles, respectively.

Donnelly put the Bears on the board with a 34-yard field goal at 9:38 of the first quarter. UMaine pushed the lead to 10-0 early in the second when Farkes and wide receiver Landis Williams hooked up on a 50-yard touchdown pass to cap an 80-yard drive.

However, SBU equalized by scoring twice in the final 5:16 of the half on Cuttino’s 25-yard TD run and a 24-yard Gaddis field goal with five seconds left in the second quarter.

UMaine went back on top on a 49-yard TD toss from Farkes to Fluellen at 11:01 of the third, then made it 20-10 on Donnelly’s 25-yarder at 10:29 of the fourth quarter.
