PRESQUE ISLE – Some diners at the Riverside Inn saw more than trees, streets and buildings when they looked out the window of the restaurant Monday afternoon.
Just before 1 p.m., some of the patrons saw a vehicle headed in their direction.
The Presque Isle Police Department spent a chunk of the afternoon at the Main Street business after a vehicle malfunctioned and hit the side of the building.
Officer Jeff Mechalko said the incident happened at 12:45 p.m.
According to the officer, Michael Robinson, 47, of Mapleton had pulled into a parking lot adjacent to the restaurant in his 1989 Ford Ranger in the moments before the accident. The parking spot was on a downhill grade, and when Robinson went to put on the brakes, he found out he had none.
Mechalko said Robinson told police he panicked and turned the vehicle off, which caused him to lose steering ability.
The vehicle careened into the restaurant, pushing in the side of one wall.
A large picture window was smashed, and some of the diners were hit by falling glass.
No injuries were reported.
Mechalko said Robinson’s truck had front-end damage. He estimated that $5,000 in damage was done to the restaurant.
No charges are pending.
