A Maine Maritime Academy student found himself in trouble this weekend after he allegedly smashed windows at the Pretty Woman store on Main Street in Orono, according to Orono police.

Zachary Hayes, 21, of Millinocket was summoned early Saturday morning and charged with criminal mischief after a caller told police he saw Hayes standing on the store steps, apparently trying to get out of the rain. As the caller walked away, he heard glass smashing and turned around to see Hayes walk away and head toward the Bear Brew Pub.

“He had glass on the bottom of his sneakers and there was a print on one of the windows that he hadn’t broken,” Orono police Sgt. Josh Ewing said Monday.

Police estimated the damage at $500. Hayes denied breaking the windows but admitted that he’d had too much alcohol to drink. He told police he would “fight this to the end,” Ewing read from the police report.

What was reported as a family fight early Sunday morning in Orono ended up with the complainant behind bars, according to police reports.

Orono police officers were dispatched to a home on MacMillan Drive after a man called saying that his girlfriend had punched him in the face. When officers arrived, they were told by both parties that they had been drinking and arguing about something that happened more than a year ago.

Police reports stated that Ian Dorsey, 21, of Orono “had blood all over his face, his lip was swollen and his hands were also covered in blood where he was trying to stop the bleeding.”

There was blood in several spots in the apartment, and Dorsey’s girlfriend had blood spatters on her glasses. She said Dorsey had tried to keep her in the apartment and shoved her.

In the end, Dorsey admitted to grabbing his girlfriend and police determined that she had acted in self-defense. Dorsey was taken to Penobscot County Jail and charged with domestic assault and criminal restraint.

Dorsey posted bail the morning he was taken into custody and is expected to appear Nov. 29 at 3rd District Court in Bangor. (Aimee Dolloff, BDN)
