I am sickened beyond words at the Portland School System’s recent decision to offer birth-control to middle school students. As a social worker working with teens, I see first-hand the emotional, mental and physical consequences that our children suffer as a result of engaging in pre-marital sex.
Unfortunately, rather than treating the root cause of sexually transmitted diseases and pregnancy, we treat the symptoms. Instead of setting appropriate standards, teaching true self-respect, goal setting and self-control, we treat our kids like animals in heat who are unable to control their impulses or desires.
Well, if we expect them to act like they have no self-control and the ability to wait to be gratified, then that is the type of child (and eventually adult) that our society will be filled with.
