Washburn tips Tigers, sets up semi vs. BC today

Lindsay Blackstone netted two goals, including the game-winner with 12 minutes left in the second half, to lift the No. 3 Washburn Beavers to a 2-1 girls soccer victory over the No. 6 Fort Fairfield Tigers in an Eastern Maine Class D quarterfinal Saturday in Washburn.

Morgan Berube posted an assist for 10-4-1 Washburn. Rachel Palmer stopped six of seven shots for the Beavers.

Adrian Parody scored the goal for Fort Fairfield. Kristen Hebert made 10 saves on 13 shots for the 8-6-2 Tigers.

Washburn’s victory set up today’s 2 p.m. semifinal in Bangor against the second-seeded Bangor Christian Patriots. BC advanced to the semifinal by defeating No. 7 Van Buren 2-1 on Monday. The other semifinal has No. 4 Katahdin of Stacyville at No. 1 Ashland in a 2:30 p.m. contest.

Other schoolgirl soccer semifinals are also set for today. In Class A, No. 4 Hampden visits No. 1 Waterville at 2:30 p.m. and No. 6 Mt. Blue of Farmington treks to Topsham to take on No. 2 Mount Ararat at 5 p.m.

In Class B, No. 4 Winslow is at No. 1 Erskine Academy in South China at 3 p.m. and No. 3 John Bapst of Bangor is at No. 2 Presque Isle at 4 p.m.

In Class C, No. 4 Madawaska travels to Blue Hill to play No. 1 George Stevens at 2:30 p.m. and No. 3 Lee Academy visits No. 2 Orono at 3 p.m.
