Big School (Classes A-B)
JAKE ARTHERS
Arthers, a senior quarterback for the Belfast football team, rushed for 94 yards and a pair of touchdowns during a 28-0 victory over Mount Desert Island that earned the Lions an Eastern Maine Class B playoff berth. Arthers scored on first-half runs of 30 and 2 yards as Belfast secured the must-win victory.
Small School (Classes C-D)
MATTHIEU NADEAU
Nadeau, a senior on the Orono cross country team, won the boys individual title at the Eastern Maine Class C championship meet held in Belfast. Nadeau outkicked Foxcroft Academy’s Graham Pearsall to win the 5-kilometer race by 2 seconds with a time of 17 minutes, 34.22 seconds.
GIRLS
Big School (Classes A-B)
HEATHER SPURLING
MDI junior Spurling was the top individual in Saturday’s Eastern Maine Class B cross country championships, leading the Trojans to the team title. Spurling finished in 19 minutes, 57.38 seconds and MDI scored a field-low 68 points.
Small School (Classes C-D)
RENEE LAFLAMME
LaFlamme’s individual victory in the Eastern Maine Class C cross country championships paced the Mattanawcook of Lincoln team to the overall crown. Her time of 20 minutes, 23.23 seconds led the field and was the third straight individual title for the senior. The Lynx had a combined team time of 1:50:00.13, more than 12 seconds better than second-place finisher Greenville.
