PTC staging popular comedy

BANGOR – Penobscot Theatre brings Charles Busch’s adult comedy “The Tale of the Allergist’s Wife” to the historic Bangor Opera House through Nov. 4.

“‘The Tale of the Allergist’s Wife’ ran for 777 performances on Broadway,” said Producing Artistic Director Scott R.C. Levy, “and I’m sure audiences in Maine will find it just as riotous and ridiculously funny.”

Directing the PTC production of the play is Nathan Halvorson, who has directed “Falsettos,” “A Christmas Carol” and “Anything Goes.”

Among the cast of “The Tale of the Allergist’s Wife” is Shalin Agarwal, who joins PTC for the first time to play Mohammed. Agarwal, based in New York City, is a graduate of Southern Methodist University.

Actor, director and choreographer Marcia Joy Douglas plays Frieda. Douglas teaches acting, improvisation, movement and voice, and is chairwoman of the drama department at the University of Maine. Her credits include her one-woman improvisational show “Story Soup-Myth Pie,” performed in several countries.

David Gable, who joins the Penobscot Theatre’s production of “The Tale of the Allergist’s Wife,” recently appeared in the new play “PB&J” in the New York International Fringe Festival. Gable joined the Broadway national tour of “They’re Playing Our Song” and in the off-Broadway performance of “The Fantasticks.”

Portraying Lee is Jeri L. Misler, who joined last season’s “A Christmas Carol” at PTC. Misler started a theater company in the remote Aleutian Islands and currently teaches drama at Bucksport High School.

A.J. Mooney, whose local credits include “Picasso at the Lapin Agile,” “Falsettos,” “Communicating Doors” and Rinne Groff’s “The Ruby Sunrise,” plays Marjorie, the allergist’s wife. Mooney was recently seen in the short film “Vacationland,” which won Best Maine Short Film at the Maine International Film Festival. She teaches theater and tap dance at UM.

Lex Liang, PTC’s resident designer for the past two seasons, returns as set and costume designer. Shon Causer is back after designing lights for “Driving Miss Daisy” and last season’s “The Ruby Sunrise” and “I Am My Own Wife.”

“The Tale of the Allergist’s Wife” will be performed at 7 p.m. Thursdays, Oct. 25 and Nov. 1; at 8 p.m. Fridays, Oct. 26 and Nov. 2, and Saturday, Nov. 3; at 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27; and at 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 3-4.
