‘A,’ ‘B’ playoffs under way tonight Bangor hosts Brunswick; Rockland needs win to secure ‘C’ playoff berth

The top four teams in both Eastern Maine Class A and B football have dominated the rest of their competition.

Lawrence of Fairfield, Bangor, Lewiston and Skowhegan were a combined 28-4 during the Pine Tree Conference Class A regular season. Gardiner, Morse of Bath, Winslow and Leavitt of Turner Center were a collective 25-7 in the PTC Class B ranks.

Week 9 of the high school football season – or Week 1 of the postseason, in those classes – provides those league leaders a chance to back up those gaudy numbers during the quarterfinal round of eight-team playoffs.

In Class A, No. 1 Lawrence of Fairfield (8-0) hosts No. 8 Mt. Blue of Farmington (3-5), No. 2 Bangor (7-1) hosts No. 7 Brunswick (3-5), No. 3 Lewiston (7-1) is home against No. 6 Cony of Augusta (4-4) and No. 4 Skowhegan (6-2) will face No. 5 Mount Ararat of Topsham (4-4).

In Eastern B, No. 1 Gardiner (7-1) will face No. 8 Belfast (3-5), No. 2 Morse of Bath (7-1) plays No. 7 Oak Hill of Sabattus (3-5), No. 3 Winslow (6-2) squares off against No. 6 Mount Desert Island (5-3) and No. 4 Leavitt of Turner Center (5-3) hosts No. 5 Waterville (4-4).

In Class C, the final week of the regular season is highlighted by the battle among three schools – Rockland, Orono and Bucksport – for the fourth and final playoff slot.

Brunswick Dragons (3-5) at Bangor Rams (7-1), 7 p.m. Friday: Their earlier meeting was somewhat closer than Bangor’s ultimate 45-0 margin of victory. The Rams held just a 13-0 halftime lead before using four third-quarter interceptions – one returned 100 yards for a touchdown by Shane Walton – to break the game open.

“It was 13-0 at the half and then we got a couple of short fields and a couple of interceptions to break it open,” said Hackett. “They’re probably the team I wanted to play the least, but probably the team that’s the easiest for the kids to take seriously because we know they have some talent.”

Brunswick is coming off a 26-15 victory over rival Mount Ararat of Topsham that it needed to force its way into the playoff picture. The Dragons are led offensively by quarterback Robbie Basquez, running backs Cam Miller and Shaun Tanner and receivers Conner Breisacher, Taurean Easter, Jake Blake and Dan Scully.

Bangor is riding a five-game winning streak that has featured stout defense and an expanding offense. Quarterback Ian Edwards has passed for more than 100 yards in each of the last three games, while Kyle Vanidestine is closing in on 1,000 rushing yards and Walton has nearly 600 yards on the ground in addition to being a key receiving threat out of the backfield.

Edwards at safety, Walton at cornerback and linebacker Tyler McDade anchor a Bangor defense that has allowed just one TD in its last 10 quarters of regulation play.

Belfast Lions (3-5) at Gardiner Tigers (7-1), 7 p.m. Friday: Belfast already has survived one win-or-go-home game, a 28-0 victory at Mount Desert Island that earned the Lions a trip to the playoffs via a tiebreaker for eighth place over Maranacook of Readfield.

Quarterback Jake Arthers and running back Alex Mansfield combined for 212 rushing yards and three touchdowns in that victory.

Belfast is 2-1 in its last three games, a streak in which Arthers has four rushing touchdowns and three TD passes while Mansfield has rushed for four TDs.

Belfast’s only loss during that run was a 32-26 decision to Leavitt, a team that gave top-ranked Gardiner a battle last weekend before dropping a 14-6 decision.

Gardiner features two of the more dynamic players in the conference in senior quarterback Kyle Stilphen and senior tailback Bass Chadwick, who has 19 touchdowns this season.

Mount Desert Island Trojans (5-3) at Winslow Black Raiders (6-2), 1:30 p.m. Saturday: Two teams on the rebound will battle in this Pine Tree Conference Class B quarterfinal.

MDI, which has been playing shorthanded in recent weeks, is coming off a loss to Belfast in its regular-season finale. Winslow has dropped two of its last three since a 6-0 start, including a 20-14 defeat at Waterville last Saturday.

These teams met in their season opener, with Winslow cruising to a 34-6 victory.

MDI, making its second straight postseason appearance, features quarterback Tyler Crawford, running back Odane Gaynor and wideout Terrence Jones. Winslow, the 2006 Eastern B champion, is anchored by a big physical line featuring tackles Corey Gay and Don Clark.

Bucksport Golden Bucks (4-4) at Rockland Tigers (5-3), 7 p.m. Friday: Rockland will head to the playoffs with a win against the Golden Bucks.

Rockland features a diverse offense led by brothers Sam and Andrew Weiss, who have combined for 1,215 rushing yards and 24 touchdowns, wideout Nick Baudanza (18 catches, 370 yards) and sophomore quarterback Dylan Meklin (711 passing yards).

Bucksport, which boasts the LTC’s leading rusher in Nate Warren (1,244 yards, 15 TDs), can force a three-way tie for fourth place with a win over Rockland and a John Bapst of Bangor win over Orono.

John Bapst Crusaders (7-1) at Orono Red Riots (5-3), 7 p.m. Friday: John Bapst has clinched second place in the LTC and a semifinal at home next weekend against No. 3 Mattanawcook Academy of Lincoln.

But coach Dan O’Connell’s club would like nothing better than to enter postseason play on a high, and a win over the Red Riots would be John Bapst’s eighth straight since a season-opening loss at top-ranked Foxcroft Academy.

Bapst features the conference’s leading scorer and second-leading rusher in Nick Smith (17 TDs, 983 yards), while Kyle Gallant leads the LTC with 884 passing yards.

Orono, 2-3 since its 3-0 start, needs a Rockland loss to Bucksport to keep its own playoff hopes alive. A Rockland loss and Orono win sends the Red Riots directly to the playoffs, while losses by Rockland and Orono would produce a three-way tie for fourth place with Bucksport that would necessitate a coin toss.
