PORTLAND – Two men in a car with Massachusetts license plates pulled into the near-empty parking lot Saturday morning at Fitzpatrick Stadium Saturday morning and rolled down a window to ask a driver in another car why there were so few people at the field 45 minutes before the Maine state field hockey championships were to start at 10 a.m.

The field hockey games had been called off Saturday because of the weather, the men were told. Disappointed after their drive from Boston, they drove off.

Minutes later, the mother of a Sanford High field hockey player did the same thing after she was told the games had been postponed.

Rainy weather forced the postponement of not only the state field hockey championships but also Eastern and Western Maine regional soccer championship games all over the state.

The state cross county championships at Leavitt of Turner went off as planned, as did several regular-season and playoff football games.

The state championship field hockey games will be played Saturday following the original schedule. The Class A game between Sanford and Skowhegan will start the day’s games at 10 a.m., followed by the Class C game between Foxcroft Academy and Telstar of Bethel at noon, and then the Class B game between Waterville and Maranacook of Readfield at 2 p.m.

The Maine Principals’ Association traditionally announces sites for state soccer championships after the matchups have been set, which is usually the Monday after the regional games have been played.

Only the Class D matchups and Class C boys matchup have been set, however, and the matchup of at least two state games won’t be known until Tuesday afternoon.

The Eastern Maine Class A girls soccer game between Waterville and Mount Ararat of Topsham will be played Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. In Western Maine Class B, the girls game between York and Yarmouth is scheduled for Tuesday at 3:30.

The fourth-seeded Winslow girls travel to Bangor to face No. 3 John Bapst for the EM Class B title Monday at 3 p.m.

The Eastern Maine Class C final between No. 1 George Stevens Academy of Blue Hill and No. 3 Lee Academy had already been postponed from Saturday and will be played Monday at 2:30 p.m. in Blue Hill. The winner will face North Yarmouth Academy, a 1-0 winner over Waynflete of Portland last Friday.

On the boys side, No. 6 Ellsworth goes to No. 1 Winslow Monday at 3 p.m. to decide the Eastern Maine Class B title.

Other Western Maine games to be played Monday are the Class A girls and boys games between Gorham and Greely of Cumberland Center – the matches are the same for both games – and the Class B boys final between Falmouth and Freeport.
