WATERVILLE – Billy Ryan completed 11 of 22 passes for 168 yards and two touchdowns as the Colby College football team edged Bates 20-13 in the first game of the Colby-Bates-Bowdoin series.
Richard Newton batted down a pass at the goal line in the late going to preserve the victory for Colby (1-5).
Ryan completed nine passes good for 147 yards to Justin Candon, who made a 15-yard touchdown reception in the first quarter and had a 3-yard catch in the third quarter.
Chris Bashaw added a 2-yard TD run in the fourth to provide the margin of victory. John Murphy led the defense with 10 tackles.
Brandon Colon paced Bates of Lewiston (0-6), completing 21 of 40 throws for 257 yards, including a 7-yard TD pass to Tom Beaton with 3:36 left to make the game interesting.
Colon added a 1-yard scoring run, while Matt Gregg made seven catches for 93 yards.

At New London, Conn., Brian Field intercepted Maine Maritime Academy quarterback Tyler Angell with 1:03 remaining, helping the Bears hold on to beat the Mariners.
Christian George led Coast Guard (7-1), rushing for 107 yards and four touchdowns and passing for 78 yards. The Cadets clinched their second straight New England Football Conference Bogan Division title.
MMA (5-3 overall, 4-2 Bogan) had built a 17-point, first-half lead and led by 10 in the fourth quarter. Angell (19 carries, 72 yards, two TDs) scored on a 15-yard scamper to give the Mariners a 34-24 advantage with 9:37 to play.
However, Coast Guard (6-0 Bogan) responded with a 68-yard scoring drive that took only 35 seconds. The hosts then recovered a fumble 47 seconds later and moved 40 yards in six plays to take the lead for good on Lance Lynch’s 11-yard touchdown run with 5:40 left.
Brandon Goodrich carried 34 times for 131 yards and two TDs (both 1-yard runs) for the Mariners, while Angell also threw for 106 yards and a score.
Lynch, who went over the 2,000-yard career rushing mark for Coast Guard, threw a 55-yard option pass on the Bears’ game-winning scoring march.
Former John Bapst standout Cody Andrews sparked the MMA defense with 10 tackles, while Bangor product Joe Blier made nine tackles and Nate Bolduc posted eight.
Leading 6-3, Angell’s 1-yard scoring plunge put the Mariners on top by 10. MMA pushed the lead to 20-3 on a 50-yard TD pass from Angell to Alex Coulombe with 5:18 to play in the first half.
