Some of the matchups are still unknown, but the Maine Principals’ Association announced Monday the sites for Saturday’s state soccer championships.

In fact, the locations were settled even before matchups in several classes were finalized Monday afternoon.

Only the Class D teams knew who they were playing Monday morning – both the Eastern Maine champion Ashland boys and girls teams will take on their Western Maine counterparts from Richmond, which also won both boys and girls titles.

Now the Hornets know where they’ll be playing. The Class D state championship games will be held at Schenck High School in East Millinocket.

The rest of the sites are Windham High School for Class A, Lewiston High School for Class B, and the Weatherbee Complex in Hampden for Class C.

All boys games start at 10 a.m. with the girls following at 1 p.m. Eastern Maine will be the home team.

The final teams involved in the Classes A and B girls state games will be determined today because two games have yet to be played. The Eastern Maine Class A final between No. 1 Waterville (15-0-1) and No. 2 Mount Ararat of Topsham (14-1-1) is scheduled for a 2:30 p.m. start, while the Western Maine Class B title game between No. 2 Yarmouth and No. 4 York has a 3:30 start time.

Winslow, which won the Eastern Maine Class B title Monday with a 4-1 win over John Bapst of Bangor, gets the winner of the Western Maine final.

The rest of the matchups were to be determined Monday.

In Class C girls, Western Maine champion North Yarmouth Academy will take on Lee Academy, a 1-0 winner over George Stevens of Blue Hill in the EM title game.

Eastern Maine Class B boys champion Ellsworth will play the winner of Monday’s 6 p.m. game between No. 2 Falmouth and No. 5 Freeport. The sixth-ranked Eagles beat No. 1 Winslow 2-1 in penalty kicks.

The Class A boys matchup was also to be decided tonight as No. 2 Gorham and No. 5 Greely of Cumberland Center met at 7 for the Western Maine crown. That winner will play No. 1 Brunswick, a 3-0 winner over No. 2 Mount Ararat of Topsham Monday afternoon.

The winner of the EM Class A girls game will take on the winner of the WM Class A game between No. 1 Gorham and No. 7 Greely. That game was to be played Monday afternoon.

Shaw Awards announced

Twelve high school boys and girls have been named winners of the “Butch” Shaw Award, which is presented annually to the outstanding soccer players in Aroostook County.

In Class B, Kyle Corrigan of Caribou won the boys award, while Caribou’s Ali Richards and Presque Isle’s Sarah Porter shared the girls award.

The Class C winners were Parker Brown of the Houlton boys soccer team, and Marissa Albert of Fort Kent and Madawaska teammates Jamie Daigle and Susan Lavertu.

In Class D, Central Aroostook of Mars Hill’s Emanuel Martinez and Van Buren’s Alex Martin shared the boys award, while three girls – Ashland’s Whitney Flint, Van Buren’s Lindsay Lajoie and Washburn’s Alex Bird – were named winners.

The award is named in memory of Clyde “Butch” Shaw, an athlete, coach and official in Aroostook County who died in 1985.

The winners were selected by a vote of the Aroostook County soccer coaches.

Mustangs’ night games a success

Mount View fans may get another week of night games next fall.

Margaret Masessa, the treasurer of the Thorndike school’s sports booster club, said the success of this year’s Homecoming week, during which the school hosted three games under rented lights, has the boosters talking about bringing back the lights next fall, too.

“People loved it,” she said. “They were some of the best games we’ve ever had, crowds and everything. It was great. The games after school, a lot of parents are working so this allowed them the opportunity to come down and support their kids.”

In 2006, Masessa said, the boys soccer team rented lights so it could have a night game. The booster club found out it could rent eight lights for the whole week for not much more than the cost of one game, so this fall it decided to rent lights for three nights’ worth of games.

The boys soccer team played Erskine of South China on Sept. 25. The field hockey team hosted Belfast Sept. 27 and the girls soccer team played Medomak Valley of Waldoboro Sept. 28. All three games started at 7 p.m.
