Tickets on sale for dessert theater in Lamoine

Remembering that last year’s Lamoine Baptist Church Dessert Theater sold out all three performances, you should make sure you have tickets for this year’s 1900s farces, “The Red Lamp,” by Hilliard Booth, and “Hyacinth Halvey,” by Lady Gregory.

The performances, featuring your favorite local actors, begin at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 2, and Saturday, Nov. 3, and at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 4, at the Lamoine Grange, whose members have graciously donated their charming facility for this benefit.

Seating is limited, however, and tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for children 12 and under. You can obtain your tickets by calling Debbie Swanberg at 667-9949.

Mary Henry reports that half the proceeds from this year’s event will benefit a local mission, and half will benefit LifeFlight of Maine, which has assisted Lamoine residents in the past.

Mary Bird, Chairwoman of the Friends of Edith Patch, will discuss “Orono’s Bug Lady,” during a free public lecture at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 1, in the Orono Town Council Chambers.

The lecture tells the story of the late Dr. Patch, a University of Maine professor of entomology.

Refreshments from the Edith Patch Cookbook will be served, and more information is available by calling OHS president Marlene Doucette at 866-2597.

The public is invited to attend a meeting to discuss the possibility of establishing a lodge of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks in the Dover-Foxcroft area at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 1, at the Penquis Higher Education Center gymnasium in Dover-Foxcroft.

The meeting was organized by John Ring Sr. of Pittsfield, a past exalted ruler of the Sebasticook Valley Lodge, and Michael Lange of St. Albans, secretary of the Skowhegan-Madison Lodge.

Jing Zhang, director and founder of the Bangor Chinese School Chinese Language & Culture Center, invites you to its fifth Chinese culture study, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 3, at Husson College in Bangor.

The program is led by Bangor Symphony Orchestra conductor and director, Xiao-Lu Li, and features topics and demonstrations with Zhang, Li, Husson College and University of Maine professor Suzhong Tian, artist Christine Chow, dietitian Lillian Lo, folk arts with instructor Steven Boardway, and music with Jennifer Chang and Husson professor Cathy Wall.

The cost is an expected donation of $50-$75 for the full day or $25-40 for a half day, and includes tuition, materials, lunch and 1.5 continuing education units.

Proceeds will benefit student scholarships. Jing Zhang reports the school needs to raise $1,200 for scholarships this semester.

Heidi Sharpe suggests alternate travel routes for those planning to attend the First United Methodist annual Church Fair from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 3, at 703 Essex St., Bangor.

Sharpe suggests you use either Alden Street, next to Baldacci’s Restaurant off Broadway, or Grandview Avenue, off Broadway, by Bangor High School, to access this event since the Essex Street bridge is closed.

Tracy Evans of the Northport VFW Ladies Auxiliary wrote that the organization is hosting a “formal prom-style dance,” from 7 to 11 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 3, at the Blue Goose on Route 1 in Northport.

Advance tickets are $10 each or $15 for couples, and are available at the Army-Navy Store on Main Street in Belfast, or by calling Merleen Palmer at 338-2414. Tickets at the door are $15 each or $20 for couples.

Open to everyone 16 and up, the event is “in support of the veterans and troops,” Evans wrote of the dance that features hourly drawings, the crowning of a prom king and queen, a photographer, food and refreshments.

Formal dress is encouraged, but semiformal is acceptable, she added.

The Machias Historical Society is hosting a spaghetti supper at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 3, at Holy Name Parish Hall on Broadway in Machias.
