Inn good taste

Calling all vegetarians: Fiddlehead Inn, a vegetarian bed-and-breakfast, has opened in Brewer. Innkeeper Saundra Haley will offer her guests a selection of egg-based dishes – scrambled with watercress, goat cheese and fresh herbs, for example – as well as soy meat substitutes, waffles, pancakes, fruit smoothies, fresh seasonal fruits and homemade sweetbreads; the menu will change daily. The inn is located at 5 East Summer St. in Brewer. A Web site, www.fiddleheadinn.com, is expected to be live sometime today, but in the meantime, you can contact Haley at 989-1854 for more information.

Frozen assets

Frosteas and Frostbites, the all-natural freeze pops made by Blue Hill-based Wise Acre Inc., recently received the 2007 Most Innovative Product award at the International Natural Products Expo East show. The company was among 1,790 participating vendors. Frosteas are made with organic teas, while Frostbites are flavored with honey and organic Maine maple syrup. They’re available locally at Tradewinds Marketplace in Blue Hill.

An Italian flair

The next wine dinner at Pairings in Winterport will combine local wines with dishes inspired by the cuisine of Italy. The dinner takes place at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 10. As diners look on, chef Robert Waldron will prepare an amuse-bouche of Roasted Garlic Stuffed Artichokes with a Lemon Coulis, paired with Winterport Winery Orchard Blush Wine; Creamy Golden Squash Soup paired with Winterport Winery Apple Wine; a Salad of Romaine and Mixed Greens with Tomatoes and a Roasted Vidalia Onion Vinaigrette paired with Winterport Winery Dry Pear Wine; Beef Braciola served with Gnocchi and Seasonal Vegetables, paired with Winterport Winery Dry Blueberry Wine; and a dessert of Tiramisu paired with Winterport Winery Flying Dutchman. The dinner costs $64 per person and reservations are required – call 223-0990. For information, visit the Web site: www.pairingsinmaine.com.
