Big School (Classes A-B)
GREG BERRY
Berry, a senior goalkeeper for the Ellsworth boys soccer team, allowed just two goals in four games as the Eagles rose from the No. 6 seed to win the Eastern Maine Class B championship. Berry had shutouts against Caribou and Presque Isle in the regional quarterfinal and semifinal, then made 14 saves as Ellsworth outlasted Winslow 2-1 in an EM championship game decided by penalty kicks.
Small School (Classes C-D)
ETHAN WELCH
Welch, a junior sweeper for the Madawaska boys soccer team, played a pivotal as the Owls defeated No. 1 Dexter and No. 2 George Stevens of Blue Hill by identical 2-1 scores to win the Eastern Maine Class C championship. In each game, Welch cleared away an opponent’s shot that had gotten past the goalie and was headed for the back of the net, plays that proved critical in the one-goal victories.
GIRLS
Big School (Classes A-B)
MARIAH GROVER
Grover, a junior outside hitter and middle blocker on the MDI volleyball team, helped the Trojans to their fourth straight Eastern Maine title with 12 kills, two aces off 8-for-8 serving, and two assists in a 3-0 win over Woodland. She led MDI with nine kills, five blocks and 12-for-12 serving in a 3-1 loss to Greely of Cumberland Center in the state final.
Small School (Classes C-D)
HEIDI SAPPIER
A junior forward on the Lee Academy girls soccer team, Sappier scored the game-winning goal in the second half of Monday’s Eastern Maine Class C final as the Pandas moved to 17-0. Lee beat George Stevens of Blue Hill, which was also undefeated, 1-0 for the regional title.
