BANGOR – A Bradford man was sentenced Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Bangor to more than eight years in prison for being a felon in possession of ammunition.

Richard E. Hurd Jr., 39, was sentenced to 100 months in federal prison and three years of supervised release.

Wayne Foote, Hurd’s Bangor attorney, immediately filed a notice to appeal the sentence to the 1st Circuit Court of Appeals in Boston.

Hurd faced up to 10 years in federal prison and a fine of up to $250,000. Under the federal sentencing guidelines, the recommended sentence was between 71/2 and 91/2 years in prison due to Hurd’s criminal record, which included a 1997 conviction in Penobscot County Superior Court for trafficking in cocaine.

Federal law prohibits anyone convicted of a felony or a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence from possessing a firearm or ammunition for any reason.

Hurd was arrested with ammunition in his pocket on Jan. 31, 2005, on a state charge of operating after suspension. He pleaded guilty on Jan. 24, 2006, and has been held without bail for almost a year.

Since his arrest, Hurd has had four different attorneys, which delayed the resolution of his case.
